Metropolis (German / silent)
LEAST favorite foreign film ....
8 Women (French — snarky snickers about the rib-tickling hilarity of father-daughter incest. Must be wonderful to be “progressive” enough to get the joke!)

I’ve only sat through three foreign language films in my life, so I guess they’re my favorites since I own a copy of each:
The Seven Samurai
Das Boot
The Passion of the Christ (which probably doesn’t qualify as a “film” since it was made by an American for an American audience, but it’s in a foreign language and that’s enough for me)

I agree; The Lives of Others is one of the best movies ever, foreign-language or otherwise.

Help me on the names folks:
1. Kagushima? War movie where the soldiers had flags on their backs and they picked some twin commoner to stand in for general.
2. Recent film where assassins were trying to kill the Chinese emperor and at the end the guy had a chance to kill him with one move (he got close enough by supposedly killing other assassins) but he wanted China to be united and didn’t do it. He died in a hail of arrows like 300.
3. Black and white film where peasants hired a bunch of out of work samuri to defend the town.
