Firefox 3.5 trundled passed Internet Explorer 7 in the past few days to become, temporarily at least, the world's most popular web browser.
According to analysis outfit StatCounter, Mozilla's latest browser just slipped ahead of Microsoft's surfing tool in the week commencing 7 December by grabbing 21.93 per cent of the global market.
But it's of course worth noting that while Firefox might be top dog by version number, it's important to point out that Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 is also pulling in plenty of punters.
So when all the stats are combined Microsoft's browser remains the clear winner with a 55.44 per cent share, of which IE 8 holds 20.33 per cent of the market and IE 7 controls 21.2 per cent.
Redmond's unloved IE 6, meanwhile, retains 13.89 per cent of the market, at the last count.

firefox crashes and hangs a lot I find on Windows7. I have 3 installs of 7 and all three have the issue. I am completely up to date as firefox has pushed out a few stability updates as of late. I love their browser. I hate IE with a passion... Hope they fix the stability issues soon.

I’m just glad Chrome finally came out in Linux, my experience has been that Firefox is a dog on Linux.
I still run IE6 and will until they stop security upgrades. Firefox is my browser as I use a bunch of addons including those that make commenting on FR a lot easier, primarily bbXtra.
Well, I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but I down loaded IE8 and my browsing was slowed down to nearly a halt. I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE6 and everything works fine.
lol. When I first got online I had such an old machine the ISP sent me a floppy with Netscape 1.22

I actually still use Firefox 2.0 because some of my favorite add-ons and themes are not Firefox 3 ready.
I'm sure you thought of this but what plugins are you using? I am on win7 with the latest non-beta firefox and the only issue I have is that when saving an image from the browser sometimes the "New Folder" button produces a New Folder but it doesn't show up in the dialog box. And this may easily be a win 7 problem and not firefox. Otherwise ff seems stable on my box. Dual core, 4gb ram.
I have the latest FF and noticed that it takes a lot longer to be able to browse (I start with about:blank) with each new patch release applied (might be a local machine issue) Anyways, I loaded the latest Google Chrome a few weeks back and I’m quite impress at it’s speed at rendering sites. Possible local machine issue with FF not effecting Chrome performance a bit. Chrome is worth a try.
I don’t have any plugins. Straight install and use. It very well could be a 7 issue since this happens on all three installs I have. The browser will first hang, then crash and restart and it asks if I want to restore my session or start new. I pretty much only go to drudge, FR, gmail and facebook. I do click news links from FR and drudge. I do not usually venture out beyond that on a regular basis. I have a few sites I frequent and that’s it. Not sure the cause. For the most part firefox has been stable. on XP I found it to be rock solid. So far on 7 though, several crashes a day. The one thing I like is I do not lose my spot when it does crash as it restores my tabs.
I like win7 BTW but it ain't perfect and needs some fixing especially, I think, in the file system and dialog boxes. Quite a few programs choke on installation when they are dealing with the file dialog and setting paths, etc, at least in my experience.

Not that this post is really that helpful but I’m running Windows 7 on three boxes with FF 3.5 and haven’t experienced the issues you are having. My brother is running it on 3 machines as well and hasn’t reported crashing and hangups and he’s the type that would complain to me about it. We are all running Windows 7 Ultimate but I wouldn’t think the flavor of 7 would make the difference.
