Romney silent on GOP plan (Contract with America) (FLASHBACK 10/01/1994)
The Boston Globe | 1994-10-01 | Frank Phillips & Chris Reidy

House group's 'contract' is issue in 2 Mass. races.

(snip)

Republican US Senate hopeful Mitt Romney yesterday distanced himself from a GOP leadership move to rally congressional candidates behind a "contract with America" - a 10-point manifesto that embraces welfare cuts, tax cuts and a beefed-up military.

The contract, promoted by Rep. Newt Gingrich of Georgia, is already a hot issue in Massachusetts' 6th and 3d congressional districts, where Republican freshmen Peter Torkildsen of Danvers and Peter Blute of Shrewsbury are defending their support of the document in the face of charges from Democratic opponents that it would inflate the federal deficit.

Romney aides, hoping to keep their candidate out of the controversy the contract has generated and as far from Washington politics as possible, said the GOP hopeful, who is seeking to unseat US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, has not read the document and had no plans to support it.

Hmmm, a Republican playing it safe in Mass. That’s a sure path to victory (yep). Anyway, no doubt he’ll play it safe with Obama, just like McCain.

He only makes comments after he has gauged all the directions of the wind, taken polls and then if challenged in the least he will backtrack and switch sides.

Reminds me of Bill Clinton.

Folks, I’m NOT a Romney fan, but this WAS 15 years ago. There are certainly more recent reasons to find fault with people who actually HOLD office currently than bashing Romney now, aren’t there?

Because of his association with MA's version of socialized medicine, Romney doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting the 2012 GOP nomination.

Hell, he'd probably have a better chance if he became a 'Rat and mounted a primary challenge against Zero.

15 years was not all that long ago.

Mitt was nearly 50 years old 15 years ago.

People rarely change their politics after the age of 35; this is why anyone who is being honest with himself knows Mitt is a phony.

So troll on Romneybot, troll on!

Good point. Could knowledge of it prevent a recurrence of:

“The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday.
The cause of death: failed leadership.
The party is survived by a few leftover legislators
and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists
who have been ignored for years.
Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow.
In lieu of flowers, send messages to Republican voters
warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney.”

- Boston Herald, 11/12/2006

"In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican
Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more
Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor
as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans
have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely
ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time
during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign.
He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate
the day before the general election!
“Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months
after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing,”
[Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party]."
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006
