NHL WINTER SPORTS CLASSIC
nhl.com ^ | 12/29/09 | various

Posted on 12/29/2009 2:58:35 PM PST by airborne

The ice hockey rink is all set up at Fenway Park, in anticipation of the New Years Day meeting of the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins.

The game starts at 1 PM Eastern time on NBC. For those with the NHL Network, there are pre game and post game programs scheduled.

James Taylor is slated to sing the National Anthem, and with the recent snow storms in the northeast, the cold, windy, Boston weather could make this game an instant classic!

Billy is hoping to make the US Olympic squad.

He’s going about it the right way!

Yes...he should make the team :)

No video of the ‘support’ staff pushing the bus. That would have been funny (my boys are having a discussion about why the players ‘shouldn’t’ do stuff like that).

Errey is in rare form tonight with his ‘color.’ LOL

went to Wrigley Field game last year. Also able to skate on the ice the day before. Phenomenal experience. I talked with Andy McEllman, a Chicago area NHL linesman who officiated that game: he was ecstatic.

Old Time Hockey. Outdoors with snow flurries

The story I read says the coaching and other staff did the pushing.

No players were involved.

From the look of the video link I posted above, the rink is in use for public skating already.

****Hextall lost my respect when he came out of the net and attacked Chris Chelios at the end of a playoff loss.****

I loved that. Of course I was a Flyers fan back then. Chelios has been a good ambassador for the game.

As for the game on New Years Day I heard that it might rain during the game. That could be a problem. You have to credit the NHL for stepping up and filling the void created by the BCS moving so many of the games away from New Years Day to other days.

This brings back childhood memories of Ftorek when he played for the Cincinnati Stingers in the WHA. Had his autograph (and others on the team) but they are long lost to time.

He was a monster for Cincinnati; scored somewhere around 100 goals in two seasons there, I think.

I still remember the parade our town had for him and his teammates on the 1972 Olympic team after they won the Silver.

Some of my favorites, too. Don’t forget Ace Bailey (RIP 9/11), Terry O’Reilly, Johnny Bucyk and Wayne Cashman.

I actually preferred the earlier rival with the Rangers and Bruins

Two days ago was the 30th anniversary of the brawl in NY, where the Bruins climbed into the stands and went after the Ranger fans who had been harassing them. I'll never forget O'Reilly leading the charge and Peter McNabb taking a shoe off a guy's foot and beating him over the head with it.

Those were the days.

James Taylor did a great job with the National Anthem!

And the B-2 fly over was a nice touch!

Beautiful ice rink! Extremely fast ice!

Really choppy ice. Lots of bouncey pucks.

Let’s see if the Zamboni fixes it over the intermission.
