MESA, Ariz. - A teenager accidentally ran over and killed her 17-year-old brother as the two played around in a shopping mall parking lot, police said yesterday.
Ed Wessing, Mesa police spokesman, identified the brother as Dwight J. Brock Jr. and his sister as 16-year-old Nicole M. Brock, both residents of Mesa.
The sister had dropped off her brother at Superstition Springs Mall on Saturday evening, Wessing said, and then they started playing around, with the brother jumping in front of the car and the sister slamming on the brakes.
The last time that happened the sister was unable to stop and ran over the brother. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Dwight is a Darwin award winner; he will be unable to accept it in person.

Dodging 2,000 pound vehicles is fun. RIP, Dwight.
Well, first off, we know the vehicle wasn’t an SUV or that would have been in a sinister title for the story.
Secondly, it is obvious that the auto manufacturer should have built in a fail/safe mechanism for reckless teen drivers. I smell a class action suit.

“It’s time for another ‘Bad Idea, Worse Idea’.
“Bad idea...playing chicken with your sister.
“Worse idea...playing chicken with your sister when you’re on foot.”
They’re mature enough to drive at 16 or 17, right? Well hopefully most teens that age are mature enough...

Girl accidentally runs over, kills brother
>>A 16-year-old Mesa girl is said to be devastated after accidently running over her older brother with her car at the Superstition Springs Center mall Saturday evening.
The accident was the result of horseplay gone wrong, said Sgt. Edward Wessing, Mesa Police Department spokesman.
The girl accidently ran over her brother after dropping him off in the parking lot at the mall around 9:20 p.m., Wessing said. The mall sits at U.S. 60 and Power Road in east Mesa.
As a joke, the boy attempted to jump in front of his sisters car as she began to pull away. On the second jump, she did not stop in time, Wessing said. No charges are anticipated, he said.
It doesnt appear to be a criminal act, he said.
The brother did not survive his injuries, Wessing said.
The officers who responded said she was just devastated, he said. She was not doing well last night.
So what ever happened to nice, safe, automotive related activities like Christmas tree surfing?
I miss the “good old days” of last year.
I wonder if his ghost will haunt the mall forever.
Sounds like the brother was a Grade A idiot. I feel bad for the sister. I’m sure she wasn’t expecting the dolt to jump in front of the vehicle a second time. RIP, but geez, it’s hard to feel sorry for such stupidity.
I guess they were hoping for the best.
I feel bad for her too—she will carry this around with her the rest of her life. Especially knowing that how her parents will feel. Very sad.
True; and he did jump in front a second time...
Prayers for the family. How tragic. :-(
If every foolish, and dangerous, thing teens did turned out for the worst there would be no one left to grow up. I suspect every adult recalls doing something that in retrospect makes them shudder. Teens are notorious for acting with out thinking it something through, and to add to the problem they have very little experience on which to base the expected outcome.
Goodness how my heart and prayers go out to this young lady and her family. What a burden to carry into adulthood.
Note to teenagers, you are not immortal!
My friends and I used to roll noisily onto slowly moving cars to scare people. One friend did it so often we used to gun it and try to hit him hard. Thank God we never succeeded but I wasn't from lack of trying he was just too quick.
We are lawyers, pastors, and business owners today so please don't call us stupid but we were hormone enraged teenagers.
I go back there once every few years to visit and sure enough, someone always brings up the incident. There's a great joke about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot, but it can't be told here. The joke like has to do with that ONE thing you did ONE time and no on can forget it or remember all the good things you did.
