Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season, and league sources say longtime USC coach Pete Carroll is being targeted as Mora's replacement.
Mora attended a meeting Friday morning with management, at which time he was told by Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke that he did not win enough games to save his job. The Seahawks ended the season on a four-game losing streak to finish 5-11.
Mora was shocked by his dismissal, believing that when he was called to Lieweke's office that he they would be in discussion about the team's vacant general manager's job, Seahawks sources said.
"This team, more importantly this community, means so much to me that it hurts not being able to see this through," Mora said in a team-issued statement. "I am disappointed I did not get the chance to complete my contract. This is a tough business that sometimes demands immediate gratification."
The Seahawks are floundering less than four years after they appeared in the Super Bowl. Seattle is 9-23 since its last playoff appearance in January 2008, after four consecutive NFC West titles, and now it's without a coach, general manager and president.
We've made a tough decision today," Leiweke said in a statement. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful. Today's decision, while difficult, is part of the process in building a franchise with a new vision in 2010."
Will Carroll be part of it? In a text message Friday, he said, "You know I haven't responded to a NFL question in two years." But a league source said Carroll is interested in the job and

This is what, the third or fourth year in a row that Carroll has been rumored to be lured to the NFL?
The Seahawks are officially adrift. Mora may or may not have been the answer, but you can’t blow a team up every year and still play good football.
That would probably be Marty Schottenheimer.
Jim Mora, Jr. has only been fired from two head coaching gigs, the Falcons in 2006 and now the Seahawks.
(Washington)Husky fans would be delighted! Not only would the Seahawks have a half-decent coach, but maybe someone ELSE would be a Pac-10 leader BESIDES U-damn-S-f’n-C.
Oh oh, that is my mistake...I was thinking Jim Mora Sr., former coach of the New Orleans Saints. I thought that he was somehow still making the rounds. X_X
Multiple NFL sources have said Carroll is gonna take the job. According to ESPN radio, FWIW.
Carroll is not a good fit for the NFL, IMO.
We had him up in NE for 3 years. And while he had an okay record, the players didn’t buy into his rah-rah brand of motivation.
He is made for college, and is a superstar at SC.
Only 8, Oregon will miss the annual USC tanking.
It will never work. For one thing Carroll never had a salary cap at USC

Jim “Playoffs?” Mora, Sr. is an analyst on NFL Network. Jim Mora, Jr. is the guy who just got canned.
When the NCAA didn’t accept USC’s self imposed football sanctions (unlike their basketball sanctions) I think it sent a message to Carroll that it was time to rethink his career options.
As much as I love the Buckeyes and the Big Ten my other favorite team is Carroll’s Trojans. I hope Carroll stays right where he is.

Oh well, at least it is good to know that his son is carrying on his dad’s losing ways.
The word around Los Angeles is that it is a done deal.
