Wow. A video clip has surfaced from 2008 in which Scott Brown, the Republican candidate for Senate in Massachusetts, clearly suggested that President Obama may have been born out of wedlock.
Im sure some will try to dismiss this as an isolated stray remark. But its clear if you watch the video that theres a broader context: Brown is clearly aligning himself with the Limbaugh wing of the GOP, in which slurs along these lines are standard fare. And as Steve Benen points out, claims about Obamas illegitimacy were an integral part of the birther craziness.
So will this actually make political waves? If Brown were a Democrat, it would instantly be a huge scandal. The outrage machine would be working overtime. And the news media would, of course, pick it up.

At what level of undeniable reality does something cease to be "an integral part of the birther craziness," and start being an obvious FACT??
There is a video of Michele Obama saying Obama’s mother was very poor and very single when she had him.
So they’re accusing Brown of plagiarism?
One of the threads from yesterday posted a script from Michelle Obama last year where she says Barack was born to a single mother.
End of Story!
(What a stretch this one was - Dems are really hurtin')

Obamas mama unwed mother, Michelle says

Michelle contradicts Obama nativity story
Divulges Ann Dunham was very young and very single at birth of U.S. president (Aaron Klein at WorldnetDaily)
Michelle made her little slip at a 2008 roundtable at the University of Missouri.
Michelle Obama explained her husband understands the struggles of low-income families.
He understands them because he was raised by strong women. He is the product of two great women in his life. His mother and his grandmother, she said.
Barack saw his mother, who was very young and very single when she had him, and he saw her work hard to complete her education and try to raise he and his sister, Michelle Obama said.
Her remarks about Dunham being very single when she gave birth to Barack Obama were also quoted last year on a blog posted at MSNBC.com. The remarks, however, contradicted previous claims President Obama made about the circumstances of his birth.
It’s not nice to call the president a bastard, even though they called G.W. worse than that and he had a real loving mother and father and PAPER WORK.
News! News! It’s official Obama is an SOB!
Trying to manufacture a scandal at the 11th hour.
Legally, no. Back when the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate actually meant something, what mattered was whether the child was born to a married woman, not how long after the marriage the birth took place.
As I understand the law in most places, that the marriage was bigamous did not affect the legal status of the mother or child. Otherwise it would be punishing innocents for the crime of the "husband."
In the last few decades, our society has decided, appropriately, that there are really no illegitimate children, just illegitimate parents.
Anybody who tries to make some kind of an issue about Obama's status in this regard should be ashamed of himself. Also doing so is VERY bad politics.
The video fades out in the middle of a sentence, fairly obviously because they’re trying to take what he said out of context.
As a general statement, I don't disagree. But if you watch the video you'll see the statement Brown made was in the context of defending Sarah Palin, and the line in question was a brief aside, prompted by the lady he was debating, not some long winded attack.
The DEMS brought up the subject of illegitimacy and single motherhood in 2008, not us. The brought it up positively, as an obstacle Obama admirably overcame, and negatively, as a cudgel AGAINST Palin. You want to tsk tsk someone about it, direct your ire there.
I have and do. As I pointed out, it’s fairly obvious this quote was taken out of context, as it interrupts him in the middle of a sentence.
Zero’s mom was a slut. Nude pictures of her are posted on the net and they are not photoshopped, they are real. They made a poor choice to attack Brown with this of all things!
Hmm. Just checked them out. To be brutally honest, not bad! Lol.
This may be what saves “Teddy’s Seat” for the Dems, I fear.
More ignorant blathering by Krugman, he just can’t seem to get anything right. In addition to Brown being on the same page as Michele Obama, I’d like to also point out that Limbaugh is not a birther by any stretch of the imagination.
Bill Blythe had not divorced his previous wife when he married Virginia Cassidy, Bill Clinton’s mother. But I guess that means that Bill Clinton is not technically illegitimate. (Whether Bill Blythe was actually his biological father has been called into question by some people.)
