The Apple iPad: It's just ahead of its time

It's hard to argue the fact that this week's Apple iPad launch disappointed the tech crowd, and not just because of that inexplicable name. Despite its lovely design, beefier core apps, and new e-book features and store, the iPad is hampered by a well-documented string of missing features: a camera, 16:9 support, Flash support (seriously?), multitasking, SD card slot, HDMI or high-res video output support, USB ports, GPS, and so on. Plus, it's exclusive to the AT&T network (again: seriously?) in this iteration, the pricing scheme is overly complex, and while I'm not sure it's genuinely overpriced, it's nevertheless expensive, and you can't imagine the price going much lower without crashing into the 64GB iPod Touch and making the iPad look a lot like a sucker's buy.

How can something be ahead of it's time if it's entire functionality is barely in excess of a three year old phone? Either way yes MS has a planned tablet(something it has been planning for years and was leaked in September of last year) called the Courier.

BTW why are you showing a fan concept of the iPad with the stylus? The iPad can not use a stylus, another one of its failings.

It has issues, but...
Compare the original iPod Classic to today’s iPod touch. I’m guessing the the iPad is only the beginning and in 3-5 years it (and it’s copycats) will supplant the laptop.

Why put up a picture of a concept drawing after the real thing has been released? There is no ‘iPen’, nor does the iPad look anything like that, and the real dock is portrait mode, not landscape. No attached little kickstand either. I’m sure there will be a wireless keyboard at some point from a 3rd party, but it sure ain’t here now...

AT&T network (again: seriously?)
It's worst feature IMO.
On the bright side, I'm hoping that the $30/month 3G pricing affects the other carriers and brings the price down industry-wide.
To: myknowledge
I’d almost get one but I’ll wait for the 1600x900 IPS display, more storage, and the iPhone OS 4.0, which is supposed to get true multitasking ability.

The killer app for the iPad will be drop dead perfect voice recognition technology, which will render keyboard computing obsolete.

To make a iPad that features WiFi so you can surf the network via wireless internet access points; then neglect to support Flash (a main-stay of websites the world over) is mind-numbing to me.
This nearly defeats the entire purpose of having a web browser.

Apple wanted a tablet that would not cannibalize sales of the iPhone on one end, or the Mac Book on the other end. So something like the iPad is the only place they have to go.
When I see a real computer in this form factor, with this kind of display and battery life, I'll probably buy two.

The iPad can not use a stylus, another one of its failings.Ummm, yeah ... you can use a stylus. A pressure sensitive pad doesn't care if you use your finger or a stylus. You don't NEED to use a stylus, but if that's you thing, poke away with your plastic stick.

Apple won me over with the iPhone. I love my iPhone and I was REALLY looking forward to this thing. I run my life with the iPhone and I had visions of using the iPad as a home companion piece for it.
IMHO, this thing is a failure of epic proportions. In it’s limited state, IF it were under $300, it would be okay, but $500 for a device that actually has LESS features than my phone is pretty awful.

Voice recognition will be cool, but I really would like to see them develop a stylus that works for this. Taking notes in meetings (the idea of 10 people in a meeting, or 300 college students in a lecture, speaking into their computers is a little absurd.) It would also be much easier for drawing and the graphics programs.
All that notwithstanding, as usual I am looking forward to future iterations of Apple technology. The critics are shortsighted.

You would need a special stylus for that type of touchscreen, but they do make one for the iPhone/Ipod Touch, so I’m pretty sure it would work with this.

It does handily beat your iPhone in one respect: screen size.
But yeah, I was going to get one of these, but I think I’ll wait for iPad 2.0 instead.
In the mean time, $550 buys one helluva lot of laptop power.

Um not in the way stylus’s are meant to be used(ie writing). If you just want to use it to move things or tap on it, go ahead, but the screen isn’t made for that and you risk ruining the screen.

Not sure about that - an I phone will not work with anything narrow like a stylus or pen - I’ve tried when I first got my I phone. Seems to only work with a finger, can’t be wearing gloves either.

Id almost get one but Ill wait for the 1600x900 IPS display, more storage, and the iPhone OS 4.0, which is supposed to get true multitasking ability. The OS can already multitask. It's UNIX, of course it can. The only question is whether Apple allows multiple user apps to multitask. So far Apple doesn't allow that, mainly out of battery life and performance concerns. Rumor is that around the 4.0 time, Apple will consider the hardware powerful and energy-efficient enough to allow multitasking.

Coming from someone that uses some of the best voice recognition technology available on a daily basis:
Voice recognition sucks!
I am using the product in a closed room with a noise cancelling headset. Trying to use voice recognition with a standard mic in an airport or car would be an exercise in frustration.
To: perfect_rovian_storm
Cost seems high when compared with functionality. Don’t forget the data plans and accessories to really make this thing usable (USB, SD, keyboard, data transfer).

This nearly defeats the entire purpose of having a web browser. OTOH, Flash nearly defeats the entire purpose of the WWW. Apple is just being purist. I'm on the fence on this one -- I'd like to see Flash fade away, but then it is still here. For example, I can't get one of these and let my kids use it, since they love their Flash-based kids game sites. I don't know why Jobs didn't just include it, and sandbox it.
