GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) -- With a police lieutenant mortally wounded and his alleged assailants fleeing in a work truck, more than 50 law officers sped after them in a wild midnight pursuit from the Phoenix suburbs into the nearby mountains.

It was a highly dangerous endeavor. The suspects fired shots at the police cars from the speeding truck, and even tossed out wrenches, other tools and an air compressor tank during the 50-mile chase, police said. A half-dozen police cruisers were disabled after hitting debris or being struck by bullets.

But the two men in the truck were never able to lose the officers, whose numbers continued to grow even as damaged law enforcement vehicles dropped out and the officers inside hitched rides with fellow pursuers.

The chase ended near the small mountain mining community of Superior as violently as it began. The suspects jumped out and opened fire on police before falling to the ground in a hail of bullets....

Police Lt. Eric Shuhandler

Shuhandler, a 16-year veteran, was shot in the face as he walked back toward the pickup after finding the passenger had an arrest warrant, said Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marino. Shuhandler, the father of two girls, was rushed to a hospital, where he died shortly before midnight.

“Both were in stable, non-life-threatening condition Friday, according to Harrison.”
Too bad.

Are you trying to piss me off or what? The only pictures I ever want to see are of good looking babes, not some rastafarian hairbag who looks like he needs to be double tapped.

The suspects jumped out and opened fire on police before falling to the ground in a hail of bullets. Both are expected to survive.

A hail of poorly aimed bullets.

Activists who are trying to free convicted Philadelphia cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal from Death Row and get him a new trial say they will protest outside Rockefeller Center tomorrow morning as the widow of the police officer appears on the Today Show.

The sad fact is that if a citizen shoots a bad guy, they are under no obligation to try to save their life as well.

Police officers do.

Which they can accomplish by calling for paramedics. They must have all been using 9mm or peashooters. A couple .45 or .40 or .357 sig rounds and these guys wouldn’t need paramedics.
