Democrats for the Saints, Republicans for the Colts
Public Policy Polling ^ | February 4, 2010 | Tom Jensen

Americans are so polarized right now, even the Super Bowl's dividing them along party lines.

Overall 32% of voters we polled on our last national survey said they'd be rooting for the New Orleans Saints this Sunday, with 22% going for the Indianapolis Colts and 46% expressing no preference.

There's a significant partisan divide within those numbers, as Democrats prefer the Saints by a 36-21 margin while Republicans say they want the Colts to be victorious by a closer 26-25 spread. Independents lean toward the Saints as well, 33-20.

Beyond the partisan divide it's also interesting to note that a plurality of voters don't care about who wins the game. It will still pile up huge ratings Sunday night but that finding just quantifies the fact that for many watching the Super Bowl is more about the spectacle than what happens on the field.

That can’t be true. If the NFL wanted ratings through the roof, it would’ve been Packers vs. Vikings in the Superbowl. ;)

Gonna make me a Shrimp Po Boy and watch the game. (I’m a fan of the team that stayed put.)

Repubs 26-25 for the Colts, and they call it merely a “closer” margin? Sounds like a statistical tie to me.

So given the large margin of Dems for the Saints, guess that makes them more partisan, right? I wonder why this wasn’t called-out in the article?

I agree with 1000000%. Born and raised in Indiana and living in Mississippi. Most of family still lives in Indiana. If any of you were here during Katrina in Mississippi then you would know why all of us are upset. Mississippi was a big mess but got little Media, Hollywood, sport people here and there was much more damage here from the hurricane. Haley did more to keep us all moving forward and getting thing done than any of the above. We did not have people on roof tops, stealing, robbing and killing so that what all of the above was after. I'm not saying none of that happened here but Haley went on TV and said anyone caught stealing robbing from people would have full Law coming down on them. We had a Doctor from here do to NO and help he came back and wrote a editor saying they did no want water or foot that was offered to them they wanted cokes and hamber burgers. He hit them hard for being ungrateful people. Young kids would not even help put up there beds. Since then I've no respect for them. Have never liked NO football team even when Archie was QB.
I hope Colts win and win big! I went to Dick's sports and other not much Colts stuff in any but when it was there was sold out I was told and was said in paper also. Its like Saints all the time same as on MSM Oaama all the time sick of them all. So I also LOATHE the Saints. NO has have more tax $$$$$$$$ for the levees to be fixed and there elected officials used it for other thing and did nothing to fixed them.

I’m a Republican for the Saints. After 41 years, I won’t change that just because the media has to tie them to Katrina. The Saints represent the entrepreneurial portion of the city that has come back from a real man-caused disaster in a big way.

Ditto from a Republican in Metairie, LA!!!! Geaux Saints

Garcon ties Indianapolis to Haiti.
Media ties Saints to Katrina.

The Disaster Bowl comes Sunday!

Um, just one small problem with that matchup - IT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! Both teams are NFC. Did you hear that an NFL official came out and stated that the hit on Favre on a play resulting in a turnover by Favre should have resulted in a roughing the quarterback penalty, but didn’t? It was one of THE most blatent roughing the passer hits I’ve seen all year. I’ve seen games during the regular season where roughing the passer was called and I had to scratch my head as to why. This one wasn’t even close. And, the ref was looking right at Favre when the hit came it. There’s no way the ref missed the call. And, that was one of several that could have been called, but wasn’t. Plus, the Saints were holding on both offense and defense the entire game and there was only one defensive holding penalty called against them. Blatent holding too. On three passing plays Viking receivers were blatently held with no call, and the announcers pointed them out.

I’m convinced that the NFL wanted a Manning playing against the Saints this year, and they got it - through dubious means, but they got it. And, in case your wondering, I’m a 49er fan (since age 7) and a Patriots fan (since age 10). After the Patriots petered out of the playoffs I had no horse in this race.

The Saints also have a Haitian, Jonathan Vilma.

Did you watch the NFC championship game? No, the NFL wanted Manning playing against the team his father played on (plus, NO provides an added bonus as having been a victim of Katrina).

I guarantee Vikes vs Colts would have gotten better ratings.

Besides, nobody cares about Katrina anymore, George Bush is no longer President.

Win or lose, the locals have been celebrating since the last win for the Saints. This is the first real worthwile thing for the people of New Orleans to celebrate in a long time. Let’s just savor the moment!

I don’t think the NFL was interested in “ratings” in this case.

I know. But the media is using Garcon for Little Haiti in Miami. I heard one player ask a reporter why they had to talk about disasters and not football. The video vanished quickly.

Not only are the Packers and Vikings in the NFC, they are both in the same division in the NFC. There is no way to have a Packers vs Vikings SB.

SAINTS WIN!!!

They have been showing all sorts of video of how South Beach is preparing for the Saints fans and it seems to be such an exciting time. The last time Saints fans were in South Beach people were commenting on how polite, nice, well behaved they were. So it should be a great time for all. And, watching the nightly excitement on TV is like a prolonged Carnival time. WoooHoooo Saints!
