Avatar sell more tickets than Titanic

James Cameron's Avatar has sailed past his blockbuster Titanic to become number one on the all-time US domestic box-office chart.

Avatar climbed to $US601.1 million ($A678.29 million) domestically on Tuesday, putting it a fraction ahead of the $US600.8 million ($A677.95 million) haul for Titanic.

With more than $2 billion worldwide, Cameron's sci-fi sensation shattered the global box-office record of $US1.84 billion ($A2.08 billion) held by Titanic last week.

Avatar still has plenty of box-office life left. It passed $US600 million ($A677.05 million) domestically on its 47th day of release.

Back in 1998, Titanic was at barely half that amount - $US311 million ($A350.94 million) - after its 47th day in theatres.

Factoring in today's higher admission prices, Titanic still has sold more tickets than Avatar.

James Cameron must be raking in the big bucks for his movie successes with Titanic and Avatar...

I love movies but I have no interest in seeing this. From the ticket totals I must the only one.

Avatar sell more tickets than Titanic

Of course it did. The Titanic sunk almost 100 years ago.

Titanic did suck and I’ve been avoiding this movie. I may have to see it on IMAX now.

I hate it when an America hater makes a killing in this country. Something just isn’t right about that.

My brother-in-law is a conservative and he liked the movie because of the special effects.

I’m not a ScFi fan so I won’t go see it.

I am a guy and I liked Titanic.. But all his other movies are just fantastic.. Terminator 1 and 2 and Aliens was one of his best.. And the Abyss with its anti nuke was also good.. James Cameron is an ass hat though..

Have not seen Titanic nor Avatar by Cameron. I did see the original Titanic movie, however. “Nearer my God, to Thee...”

I love Titanic. I think Avatar will revolutionize the theater experience the same way the first "talkies" and color movies did decades ago. In fact, I've loved all of Cameron's films! And for everyone who calls Cameron anti-American, remember this is the same man who gave us True Lies, one of the few films where Islamic terrorists are actually the bad guys.

James Cameron is an ass hat though..

By many accounts from his contemporaries, "ass hat" is an accurate description. Helluva filmmaker, though.
