HAMILTON, ON. February 11, 2010 Researchers at McMaster University have developed a cocktail of ingredients that forestalls major aspects of the aging process.
The findings are published in the current issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine.
"As we all eventually learn, ageing diminishes our mind, fades our perception of the world and compromises our physical capacity," says David Rollo, associate professor of biology at McMaster. "Declining physical activitythink of grandparents versus toddlersis one of the most reliable expressions of ageing and is also a good indicator of obesity and general mortality risk."
The study found that a complex dietary supplement powerfully offsets this key symptom of ageing in old mice by increasing the activity of the cellular furnaces that supply energyor mitochondriaand by reducing emissions from these furnacesor free radicalsthat are thought to be the basic cause of ageing itself.
Most of the primary causes of human mortality and decline are strongly correlated with age and free-radical processes, including heart disease, stroke, Type II diabetes, many cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, and inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Successful intervention into the ageing process could consequently prevent or forestall all of these.
Using bagel bits soaked in the supplement to ensure consistent and accurate dosing, the formula maintained youthful levels of locomotor activity into old age whereas old mice that were not given the supplement showed a 50 per cent loss in daily movement, a similar dramatic loss in the activity of the cellular furnaces that make our energy, and declines in brain signaling chemicals relevant to locomotion. This builds on the team's findings that the supplement extends longevity, prevents cognitive declines, and protects mice from radiation.
Ingredients consists of items that were purchased in local stores selling vitamin and health supplements for people, including vitamins B1, C, D, E, acetylsalicylic acid, beta carotene, folic acid, garlic, ginger root, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, green tea extract, magnesium, melatonin, potassium, cod liver oil, and flax seed oil. Multiple ingredients were combined based on their ability to offset five mechanisms involved in ageing.
For Rollo, the results go beyond simply prolonging the lifespan.
"For ageing humans maintaining zestful living into later years may provide greater social and economic benefits than simply extending years of likely decrepitude," he says. "This study obtained a truly remarkable extension of physical function in old mice, far greater than the respectable extension of longevity that we previous documented. This holds great promise for extending the quality of life of "health span" of humans."
Development of new and hopefully more effective supplements is ongoing.

Golden pond ping.
I have also found a sure-fire substance that extends youth into old age...it’s called sweat!
no- really what you have to do is everymorning drink a tall glas of your own urine. ...so ive been told.
Hmmmmm. So the secret to long life is to eat nothing but bagels soaked in rat vitamins?
I take a lot (but by no means all) of that crap in my “morning handful” and “evening handful” of supplements.
If this proves true, it’s good to know I’m not ENTIRELY a crank about this.
So the fountain of youth is a bagel? Who knew. Do you get to use cream cheese?
Is there something you can do to make it yummy? LOL
I take a lot of “supplements” too....because....I had a grandfather die in his sleep of a massive heart attack at age 51....and he was skinny.....then I read an article about a really old guy who took lots of supplements that helped him stay young...and figured...well...it won’t hurt , what’s the worst thing that could happen?! There are those that say you “excrete” too much....but, I bank on the fact that SOME Of those supplements are grabbed up by my cells and used.
A biologist friend once told me the following: if you want to slow down aging, eat less. Every time your cells divide, mistakes are made. These mistakes accelerate as as you age. If enough mistakes are made, it results in cancer. If you want to slow this process down, eat less.
So I should take my vitamins when I eat my bagel.
If you follow that to its logical conclusion, eat nothing and you'll live forever.
Be careful . . . I had someone die at 51 of a heart attack also, and he took a lot of supplements, including megadoses of vitamin c. Turns out megadosing vitamin C can cause inflammation (inflammation within viens as a doctor explained it to me is a cause of heart attack).
So . . .
Moderation in all things, including supplements . . .
So the health food stores were right all along?
That said — I sprinkle ground flax seed on my veggies and salad — and really think I will start doing cod liver oil.
I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and crying like the passengers in his car.
I used to make my own onion bagels.
But I’m not that adventurous anymore. Maybe I need to start back. :-)
I don’t take much Vit C.....the only thing I take a lot of is Vit D3....the rest is just a bunch of minimal amts to cover the spectrum like this article talks about.
I’ve heard it a hundred times, but that joke still cracks me up.
