Most of those places are unarmed victim zones (UVZs. Well, not churches in Texas, and some other places, and some workplaces (Like gun shops :)) but the rest are UVZ's in pretty much every state.
In this particular case, the school was a UVZ... did the victims a lot of good didn't it?
The response was to increase the general prohibition, and make bringing a gun onto post for so called "legitimate purposes", hunting and target practice, even more difficult, including requiring all such guns to be registered with the post authorities, whether stored off or on post. Plus they added the requirement that each time such a registered firearm is brought onto post, the gate guards must be notified.
Of course none of the new rules would have stopped Major Hasan from carrying out his Jihad, but they were "Doing Something".
