A 'catastrophic event' halted the birth of new stars in an infant galaxy 10 billion years ago, scientists revealed today. They believe this may explain why early giant galaxies similar to our own Milky Way didn't just keep on expanding after they had formed.

Yet the Sun is 4.5 billion years old, so somehow star formation carried on in the Milky Way.

This just doesn't make sense.
