Microsoft unveils IE9 public preview
ComputerWorld ^ | 3-16-10 | Gregg Keizer

Microsoft today unveiled a public sneak peek of its newest browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), aimed at Web developers and the technically brave of heart.

"The Platform Preview, and the feedback loop it is part of, marks a major change from previous IE releases," said Dean Hachamovich, the browser team's general manager, in a statement issued today before he took the stage at MIX10, Microsoft's Web developer conference, to publicly launch IE9.

Hachamovich promised that Microsoft would update the IE9 preview about every eight weeks, putting the first such update in mid-May with another to follow in mid-July. He did not, however, disclose a release schedule for the successor to 2009's IE8, the browser bundled with Windows 7 .

IE 9 Platform Preview is far from polished, or even finished, Microsoft acknowledged, which is why it has slapped the moniker on the release, a first for IE.

"While it loads and renders Web pages using the Internet Explorer 9 platform, it is not designed to be a complete Web browser," Microsoft said in a fact sheet that accompanied the preview's announcement. "This build is simply a first look at the work Microsoft has done so far and is ready to share with its developer community."

Missing from the browser are critical user navigation tools such as the address bar, as well as security features like the SmartScreen anti-malware filter and IE8's private-browsing mechanism.

To give Web site designers, application developers, and others who want to track the new browser's progress a chance to try IE9, Microsoft has created what it called a "Test Drive" site that showcases the features and enhancements included in the preview.

That's a big thing to be missing. My biggest problem with IE is awkward implementation of their menu items, toobars, options and navigational buttons. Completely unintuitive.

Explorer is target #1 for adware and spyware. Firefox is much more secure, plus great ad-ons are available, like Ad-block.

Still even more secure is Opera.

I don’t know anyone who likes IE including me. I would fear to get IE9.

They should have a browser that is supersecure without all the bells and whistles and crap. Call it IE Vault or something. No reason they can’t have more than one browser out.

Like IE8 doesn’t have enough bugs to fix.

(And I am a user, I laughingly say from behind layers of security software and technical ability.)

I tried IE7, didn’t like, uninstalled. I haven’t tried IE8.

I use an IE6 based tabbed browser for FR. It has some editing add-ons that are no longer available and do not support IE7 or later. I’m not giving those up just to run IE9.

That is also part of the reason why I am apprehensive of upgrading to Win7. I hear it won’t run DOS programs and won’t run many older Windows programs. I have some of both and there are not newer versions or comparable software available. Win7 Home does not have the XP window, and if I have to run an XP window, why upgrade to the more expensive Win7 versions?

I don't know anyone who actually uses IE8 and doesn't like it. I have heard of such people, but luckily, never met one. IE8 is the best browser on the planet.

I get stuck using IE8 on some of my test machines. It’s crap. Painfully slow, ugly UI, always interrupting what I’m trying to accomplish asking stupid questions. Worst browser in history.

IE8 is horrendous. Don’t even think about getting it TomGuy! I try to copy and paste text and the mouse wants to grab much more and take control from me. I never had that happen in the past on any browser. I have to work really hard to make it do what I want.

It would be if it worked on Mac OSX and Linux like Firefox does...

Been using IE8 since it was in beta.Best browser I ever used. It's fast, smooth, great UI, runs great on every site that I visit, and has made my web browsing much more enjoyable then ever. Highly recommend.

Sorry but your experience is the exact opposite of mine. Just bringing IE8 up is annoying, painfully slow, rougher than a New Mexico highway, ugly UI, runs lousy even without even visiting a site. Recommend pretending it doesn’t exist.

IE7, IE8 are BLOATWARE. But don't feel too good about it FireFox fans, because it is very close behind. Sure its a better product than the IE's, but its pretty bloated.

I currenly use Chrome. Lean and mean. Not a big Google fan, but Chrome works well on older hardware, and on newer hardware it is still much faster than IE.

I am not a fanboi or a hater of any company or any browser, so I am just looking for _results_. I'll take a look at IE9 when it comes out fully later, and will consider changing to it if it works well.

Sorry but I'll take my own very long great experience with IE8 over yours any day, given that I have been using IE8 since beta for over 2 years.
I know the open source crazies are usually quick to spew out anti-Microsoft garbage on every Microsoft thread anywhere on the internet. Fortunately most people don't pay them any mind. IE is still # 1 and Windows is still # 1 in market share.

You started off by saying you don’t know anyone that uses it and doesn’t like it. I told you I didn’t like it and why. It’s got nothing to do with open source, or anti-MS, I hate it because every single time I have to open it it does something annoying, often more than one something. In my experience it’s a sucky browser, worship it all you want that doesn’t change my experience with IE8 being a headache creating bloated POS. Thusly you know somebody that uses it and not only doesn’t like it but loathes it.

You started off by saying you don’t know anyone that uses it and doesn’t like it.

Correct.

I told you I didn’t like it and why.”

Well I don't know you, have never met you, have never even spoken to you on FR before, so my statement still holds.

It’s got nothing to do with open source, or anti-MS,”

Sure it does. I meet people like you on tech boards like CNET all the time.

I hate it because every single time I have to open it”

Funny, my IE8 opens great every single time, and I use it all the time. My web browsing has been the best ever ssince started using IE8 over 2 years ago.

In my experience it’s a sucky browser,”

I have had a much longer and more extensive experience with IE8 than you have, and I say its an excellent browser, from MY experience.

worship it all you want that doesn’t change my experience with IE8 being a headache creating bloated POS.”

Don't you use Alisnki rules on me, by trying to project what you do onto me.
It's a bit rich coming from a guy that worships some open source garbage browser.

Thusly you know somebody that uses it and not only doesn’t like it but loathes it.”

“Thusly”? What the heck is that?
BTW, I still don't know you. You are no friend of mine. And furthermore, I still don't even have the slightest interest in getting in getting to know you whatsoever. Get it?

I use Firefox for most of my non-FR browsing.

I like it. I like the add-ons. But, as you say, it becomes bloated.

And, it still has a memory leak that has persisted since around version 0.7. The Firefox folk claim it must be caused by add-ons. But the leak occurs even without any add-ons. The 3.5.4 isn’t quite as bad as older versions, but the leak is still there. I had the older versions consume upwards of 750Mb while setting idle; 3.5.4 can consume upwards of 300Mb.

[Right now it is at 293,436k and I don’t have any webpage open.]

I run an add-on called Memory Fox. It helps some, but still, Firefox is a memory eater.

Sorry but you’re just BSing yourself now. I hate IE8 because it’s a piece of crap, wouldn’t matter which company made it. Lie to yourself if you must, but reality is what reality is, and reality that IE8 sucks.
