Microsoft Bing nabs more Web searches in February

SEATTLE – Researchers say Microsoft's Bing search engine is gaining market share in the U.S.

The software maker has worked for years to improve its search technology. It launched Bing, a redesigned search site, last June.

Bing's share of searches has crept up since then, but Microsoft remains in third place behind Yahoo and Google.

So far, most of Bing's gains have come at Yahoo's expense, researchers say. But now there's a small sign that Bing may also be tempting some Googlers. Analysts at The Nielsen Co. say Bing's share of U.S. searches rose to 12.5 percent in February, while Yahoo's and Google's shares both edged down.

It's not a clear trend, though. By comScore Inc.'s measure, Google's February share still gained a tenth of a percent.

I don't like Google's obvious politics, but most of the time they do deliver the best results. Sometimes, though, when I suspect that their political filters are limiting what I see I do go over to Bing and give them a shot.

To get all of the Google search results without letting Google get your IP address or other info, use:

Scroogle

which stands for "Screw Google", something I heartily endorse. No cookies, no search term records, access logs deleted withing 48 hours. They anonymize the request and scrape Google's results, giving you what you would have gotten if you'd gone to Google, but without being tracked, cookied, recorded, etc.

Then there's the new one:

Ixquick Metasearch

Doesn't record your IP address or make a record of your searches.

Both are as good as or better than Giggle or Bung. Ixquick also offers the capability to go to a result page via their privacy proxy, so you are never identifiable by the end website.

It's worth supporting either of these to encourage them.

I don’t really use Bing for search engine, but it is the default for my browser. I like their ‘picture of the day’ with some information on it.
