Boy attacked by pit bull

Child remains in hospital

March 17, 2010 @ 9:23pm

HOISINGTON – A young Hoisington boy remains at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson after being attacked by a pit bull terrier here Tuesday afternoon.

According to Hoisington Police Chief Kenton Doze, the 9-year-old boy was playing outside at a neighbor’s home when the dog got out of the house. “It just came up and bit him” on the ear. The names of the parents and the child are not being released.

The parents took him to the Hutchinson facility where he is expected to stay at least through today. Doze said he didn’t think surgery was required but he did need stitches.

Doze said Hoisington doesn’t have any specific dog breed bans. But, the owners of the dog are being charged under a vicious dog ordinance.

The dog was put to sleep and its head sent to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Kansas State University to be tested for rabies.

I love happy endings.

me too....I have a lab, but if she was running loose and someone shot her, I couldn’t complain, she should not have been running loose...she is always chained when let out...I just don’t understand idiots that think their dog is special if running loose...

I can’t say I see that as a happy ending. The boy still had to endure the attack and it’s aftermath.

Even more amazing to me are the idiots who bring their dogs to our local park, where signs abound that dogs must be leashed, but they allow their dogs to run around anyway. I was walking one of my labs (leased, of course) several weeks back when I witnessed an unleashed Pit Bull attack a leashed 10 year old Lab who did nothing to provoke the attack. The owner of the Lab used a stick she happened to have with her to pry the dog’s jaw open in order to get her dog released. Fortunately the Lab didn’t resist and didn’t suffer any major injuries. But, what if that was one of the many three to five year old children playing at the park that day? Stupid people.

There seems to be a perfect storm with pit bulls... vicious breed combined with irresponsible/low life owners (by and large).

Serious question: if you use a stick to poke the pit bull’s eyes out, will that induce it to release more easily?

Since I’ve never tried it, nor know anyone who has, I can’t say. I’m inclined to believe no as the pain would probably result in the jaw clamping tighter. I’d stick with prying open the jaw to obtain release, and then, perhaps, poke the damned things eyes out (making sure to penetrate into the brain of course).

Serious answer: Probably not.
Terriers bite and hold, instead of snapping and releasing like some other dogs; even if something(many were bred to catch rats, and foxes) is clawing at/biting their face. If you’ve ever tried to break the grip of a rat terrier or yorkie, you understand how tenacious they can be.

The best way to break it’s hold is to insert something behind the molars, between the soft gums, and wedge it open. Or, grab it by the back legs and sort of wheelbarrow it away in a circle; the dog will probably let go to keep it’s balance.

The modern compound bow is capable of resolving a number of these urban/surban problems. More people should have them.

Well, at least they can cryogenically freeze his head and, when they find a cure for whatever killed him (being decapitated, I guess) they can re-attach his head and he’ll be ok.

It’s hysterical how narrow minded you are... by your logic humans should all be exterminated because there are a few really terrible ones that give the entire race a bad name (with or without bad parents).

Pit bulls are just like any other dog... trained well and they’re amazing. They get a bad rap from those who have trained them as fighting dogs....

I found my pit under a house in new orleans... fearful, hungry and beautiful. She plays well with others and has never been aggressive with humans or other dogs (loves cats, too). I see many pits at the dog park I go to and have never seen an instance of unprovoked aggression. My landlord banned pits at his apartments until he met mine.

Here are a few points (taken from the quiz here: http://animal.discovery.com/tv/pitbulls-and-parolees/pitbull-myths-quiz/) ...

Studies show that the jaw of the Pit Bull is in proportion to its size and is no different than any other breed of dog. There is no evidence that any kind of “locking mechanism” exists in the American Pit Bull Terrier.

According to the American Temperament Test Society, Pit Bulls pass the test with flying colors. In fact, the Pit Bull scores 82% or more. The success of Pit Bulls in this series of tests proves they are not naturally mean or violent.

Helen Keller’s canine helper was a Pit Bull.

I encourage you all to take that quiz. You’ll be surprised.

Broaden your horizons... you’ll never be taken seriously for writing off anything in its entirety because of a small representative group. Take a simple research/stats class.

Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled that no genetic evidence exists labeling one breed more dangerous than another:

A study by the National Canine Research Council reveals biased reporting by the media, its devastating consequences for dogs and the toll it takes on public safety.

Consider how the media reported four incidents that happened between August 18th and August 21st:

August 18, 2007 - A Labrador mix attacked a 70-year-old man sending him to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers arrived at the scene and the dog was shot after charging the officers. This incident was reported in one article and only in the local paper.

August 19, 2007 - A 16-month old child received fatal head and neck injuries after being attacked by a mixed breed dog. This attack was reported two times by the local paper only.

August 20, 2007 - A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized after having his ear torn off and receiving severe bites to the head by a medium-sized mixed breed dog. This attack was reported in one article and only in the local paper.

August 21, 2007 - A 59-year-old woman was attacked in her home by two Pit bulls and was hospitalized with severe injuries.

This attack was reported in over two hundred and thirty articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks, including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

“Clearly a fatal dog attack by an unremarkable breed is not as newsworthy as a non-fatal attack by a Pit bull” says Karen Delise, researcher for the National Canine Research Council.

People routinely cite media coverage as “proof” that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs. Costly and ineffective public policy decisions are being made on the basis of such “proof”. While this biased reporting is not only lethal to an entire population of dogs; sensationalized media coverage endangers the public by misleading them about the real factors in canine aggression.

Man assaults police by throwing pit bull at them. Dog does not bite the officers.

August 20, 2009: St. Petersburg, Florida — An assailant who attacked police officers used a dog, police said, throwing a pit bull at officers not once, but twice.

The dog did not attack the officers either time he was thrown at them.

“That’s a new one,” St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt said of the incident involving the dog.

The assault took place at 4114 Fairfield Ave. S. A woman recovering from surgery told police her troubled son refused to leave their home.

The son, Renaldo L. Gary, wouldn’t budge from the doorway, police said. Then he struck Officer Michael Romano, ran outside and grabbed a family pet.

Gary threw the dog at Officer Romano, police said, yanked on the dog’s chain, pulled the animal back to him and then thew it at the officer again.

In stark contrast to the dog, Gary hit Officer Norma Alanis, police said, and shook off two Taser blasts and a dose of pepper gas before the two officers handcuffed him.

Waste of time is right. I’ve seen an unprovoked pit bull attack, and read about the large number of maulings and deaths by pit bull attacks. These stories are not make believe as you two seem to believe.

According to the American Temperament Test Society, Pit Bulls pass the test with flying colors. In fact, the Pit Bull scores 82% or more. The success of Pit Bulls in this series of tests proves they are not naturally mean or violent.

It's hysterical how ignorant you are about statistics. Have you ever heard of a poll being freeped? This is somewhat similar. These tests are administered to dogs that are brought to this group by their owners to be tested. Any chance you noticed how large the number of tested pits was compared to other breeds? Apply some thought - why would the average owner bring their Yorkie or Carin or collie to these people? It is reasonable to expect they have observed something they are concerned about. Perhaps the dog has already acted aggressively and they want independent verification.

OTOH, the owner of a pit bull (right along with rotties I'll bet) is much more likely to have the dog tested even if no aggression has been displayed. Pit bull apologists are constantly harping about the bias - do tell how it would not apply here. So get the picture - it is completely reasonable to conclude that many of the other breeds are skewed towards agression, and that conversly the tested pit bulls are a more representative sample - and yet nearly 2 out of 10 dogs still failed!

Tell you what - Chet99 can go ahead and keep on posting articles about people killed or mauled by pits. You go right ahead and get some equal time by posting all of the articles about the same occurrences involving dachshunds. After all they are MUCH more aggressive according to your source. Should be a slam dunk.
