Im certain it is a powerfull tool for the government, and getting to be more so.
I believe you are correct about the taxes, taxes with ensured representation.
"Hispanic" is a silly category, as it lumps together pure Europeans from Spain; people from Central and South America who are some mix of European, Native American, and black; Brazilians who speak Portuguese; South American natives who only speak their native language and have no Spanish descent; etc, etc.
A multitude of races, cultures, and languages get lumped under "Hispanic" or "Latino".
(Y'know, technically people of Italian descent can legitimately call themselves Latino)
So, what should they check? Does the government want skin color, or race, or origin? Or does that depend on your skin color, race or origin?
They don't even know.
Yours isn't the only household opting to complete Question #1 alone.
I’m considering making up a label that says “aren’t we now a post racial nation?” and putting that for race on all of ours.
Call 'em on it! I'm hoping plenty of Americans do the same!
We got the census in this week. I wanted to put down Scottish-American and for my religion Druid Reformed but my Aunt said no.
I came so close to doing that, because origin seems to be all mixed up with race in their little minds.
I was hoping the German/Irish stuff would get the same point across. No way was I saying "white".
How about "unknown"?.
The USA is the melting pot, many of us have many different races and origins in our background.
Let’s hear from Torii Hunter, center fielder for the Angels:

The feds do not classify Hispanic as a race, but as an ethnicity. A lot of federal documents include the notation that “Hispanics can be of any race.”
From the census:
Is Person 1 of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanich origin?
No, not of Hispanic Latino or Spanich Origin
Yes, Mexican, Mexican Am., Chicano
Yes, Puerto Rican
Yes, Cuban
Yes, another Hispanic, Latino or Spanich Origin
ex: Argentinian, Columbian, Dominican, Nicaraguan, Salvadoran, Spaniard, and so on..
My question? What dang difference should it make?
The so called "Hispanics" have their roots from Spain, and we all know the Spaniards are no brown people but white. What you refering to are the poor Mexican mestizos Indians who speak/bark a variant of Spanish language since the times of the Spanish Conquistadors.
To characterize the so called Hispanics as "brown" would be a mistake, since they are in fact Indians (red skins). This characterization applies to the most of Central and South American Countries, with exceptions. (I will have to come back to you for the exceptions")
Indeed. I'm 1/4 italian, along with german, irish, english, scottish, dutch, and american Indian hertiage. My great grandparents immigrated from Sicily and their native language was latin-based Italian. Since I have some latin blood flowing through my veins, that makes me Latino according to the one drop rule! All these years I've been an oppressed ethnic minority and never known it!! The folks at La Raza better start lobbying to get me in-state tuition rates for UCLA since I live in Illinois. Us latinos gotta stick together! ;-)
In my America there are only three people colors, Red, White and Blue.
I really wasn’t characterizing any race, though my title would make it seem so.
With the government, it is black, white or “other”. The government has placed us all in slots, they are in the business of characterizing people.
My apology, if I have offended.
I’m working for the census, basically they told us that if you answer 2 of the first 5 questions, the form is considered complete.
The government attempts to divide us with their compulsive race baiting.
My Grandfather was Sicilian! I should have checked Hispanic, no matter my skin color.
Let ‘em call me on it!
AMEN!
Thanks for the info! I’ll pass it along.
