No, it's not. You don't sign the census attesting it to be true to the best of your knowledge. I'm not sure why so many people think this.
Not really.
All African-Americans are black, but not all blacks living in this country are African-Americans.
A black immigrant from, say, the Caribbean (assuming they are legal) and are permanent resident aliens are not African-Americans, since they are not officially Americans.
I actually met a fellow freeper during the census trainnig. There were quite a few people in my traininig session who were conservatives that were working for the census to try to keep an eye on things.
Not all African-Americans are black, as John Kerry’s (who served in Vietnam) wife will attest!
You don;t know how much I like knowing that!
Golfer Ernie Els has a home in Florida. Erine is from South Africa. Ernie is clearly more African than Jesse Jackson. Should Ernie put “White” which is his color, or “African” which is his race?
No, no offense whatsoever. It is known, especially here in So Cal that the Mexicans want to portray themselves as a stand alone race (remember La Razza? (race))and if you dare say anything against them you are a "Racist".
Well, the Mexicans are just another type of "ETHNIC"group, just like the Chinese, Mongols, Vikings, Gauls, Germanic, Roman etc. Therefore claiming special privileges to freeload the system because of an imaginary persecution of specific race, it is a futile task.
A better question is why we consider Semitic/Middle Eastern/Persian people to be "white", while WHITE EUROPEAN HISPANICS are counted as "nonwhite."
True. But the census is not about demographic groups and research- or it shouldn't be. It is about representation for the "people".
From the questions on the Census it is pretty clear that the real purpose is far from what they say it is. For statistical purposes a lot of the questions make no sense -- for example, the exact birth date of each person has no significance statistically -- certainly knowing the month they were born in is sufficient for statistical modeling of things like how many kids will enter school next year. But it sure is handy if you want to match up names against the SSA and IRS databases, or against the TSA databases.
Nor is your middle initial relevant to any census purposes, but it sure is handy for the NSA, FBI, TSA, and CIA to eliminate extra name matches.
Nor is it relevant for any legitimate statistical purpose to require parents to identify children as biological or adopted. What possible effect could that distinction have on congressional districts, or even allocation of funding to states, or economic development planning?
I'll bet $100 that there are classified directives allowing NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. to search through the census data base, because there is no other reason for the Census Bureau to waste paper and money on gathering information that is useless to their supposed mission.

I have a large Mexican presence in my family. My neice married into a wonderful Mexican (from Mexico), family.
They do not see themselves as Hispanic, but Mexican. Oddly enough, they think they are brown.
And, agreeing with you, most Spaniards, are white.
But I am not the one defining a difference, Our Government is.

____________________________________________________________ Well, and thank you for helping me achieve a restfull sleep tonight.
American racial categorizations are retarded. Either go by race (biology) or go by ethnicity (Italian, Turkish, Vietnamese, etc.).
I feel the same way. But after 25 years of this crap, including years of refusing to answer the race questions on surveys, I have resigned myself to a basic fact of life: our govt is hopelessly obsessed with race and ethnicity. A lot of people probably wouldn’t have a job were it not for certain lines on official documents.
It doesn't make you a liar as long as your answers are correct on that date. Most people have a pretty good idea who will be living in their house a week or two from now.
. . .or go by how many “people” reside at this address?
I would not have a job if I didn't speak Spanish. It's almost mandatory around these parts..
What happened to a common language? The common language keeps people united. But no, I have to learn Spanish just to survive in my own Country.
That's reasnable, yes. But - is this government reasonable?
For example, anything "black" is African-American, even if the person(s) being spoken of have never set foot in the USA.
It’s all PC.
Political Correctness will be the death of us.
I looked at these questions as a GREAT opportunity for ACORN to steal identities of tax paying citizens. I mean really, name, dob, address, etc. What next, mother’s maiden name?
