This story was written before they walked through the crowd. They were going to claim that no matter what. If it was there Omedia would have it on an endless loop.

Ignore them. Don’t give them life.
If you ignore them they grow like weeds and suck up all the nutrients in the soil.
For years the greatest number of race remarks originate in the news rooms, written and tv. “Oh, Mr/Ms so and so, what does it feel like to be the first black to accomplish whatever? It’s the mass media that keeps the racism bellyaching before the citizens. Makes anyone with half a mind want to throw up.
