I got a call here at work the other day from the NY Dept of Transportation wanting a quote. The guy asked if we were a minority owned business. I knew he noticed my thick southern drawl and I noticed his thick northern accent. I paused for a second and asked if it really mattered. He said he has to get three quotes and one has to be from a minority owned company.
I went into the explaination that we are a publicly traded company and don’t have any one owner and such. I asked if people really judge businesses based on race where he is from. (ironic because us southerners are supposed to be the racists)
He asked if I knew of any businesses around there that were minority owned. I told him that usually when we do busines, we don’t judge or ask if they are minority or not. We simply go with the best business.
I am sure the guy was just doing his job, but damn. That is actual NY policy...... and white people just accept it.
I filled out the Spanish side. Race “americano” for me and “americana” for the wife.
You should write down that you are black or some other minority.
That way your community will get more free stuff.

I don’t think of myself as a color or race. I am American and so are my family members. That is the answer they got from us.
