I grow gardens... getting bigger every year. I have filled my a large portion of my 2 acres with vegetable garden boxes and fruit trees. Starting on a chicken coop now. I "can" and store food, both food I grow, and food I buy. I buy solar panels and batteries. I load ammo, and store a plenty. I have the means to protect what I have. Other items that I depend are stored as well.
I am always looking on ways to be more independent. I am always looking to increase my production of food and power. Hand water well, solar oven, generators, and fuel. I have been prepping for a few years. I will be hooking up my new solar hot water heater shortly. I dont simply want a surplus of food and supplies to hold me over if I need it, I am looking for more ways to sustain myself, even if I dont "need to". Even if there never is a breakdown in society, even if things turn around and we live in a robust economy and get a pro-constitutional pro-liberty government... even if there never is a fear of a "SHTF" scenario, I want to be as independent as I can. I seem to focus on food, defense, and energy... Beans, Bullets and Batteries.

Finally! Someone else who thinks that way!!

I sometimes laugh at how most people need to be scared half to death before they'll take action. Me, I just feel better doing for myself. There's a kind of satisfaction in self-sufficiency that you can't get any other way.

I've often wondered if maybe that's why career welfare recipients are always so unhappy. They've actively suppressed that deep-seated need to accomplish something, but it's something the human soul can't live without. (Not the accomplishment, but the need) They get angry because they're missing something important, but they can't name what they're missing, so they try to fill it by getting angry at whatever's closest, and by demanding more and more be given to them.

I'm getting waaay off topic here. I'll stop.

I am with you on that. I am in the process of converting my boat to run on solar power. Except for gasoline, I should be off-grid in a year.

Still working on making flour though.
