A state Supreme Court ruling and a Board of Higher Education decision have retired for good the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname after a four-year legal battle.
The court ruled Thursday that the board had the authority to dump the nickname at any time. The court rejected an appeal that sought to delay action.
A motion later Thursday at the board's regularly scheduled meeting in Mayville to reconsider its vote in May to retire the nickname died after nobody seconded it.

Dunno about this case..but there have been a few cases where the LIBS SCREAMED about being offended or some such S***, but the local Indian Population said Leave it Alone ..we like it!..
that’s not good enough for libs, I guess.
I ended all associations and support of my high school after they changed from the ‘Braves’ to the ‘Blaze’......
Why not call it the “Fighting Sue”? That should shut up the liberals and their lawyers.
I wonder now if the Native Americans’ intramural basketball team at the University of Northern Colorado will change their name from the “Fighting Whities” to something more politically correct so as not to offend caucasians.
that court and board shall henceforth be known as cluckin’ chickensh*ts.
Yeah....the local native population had no problem with the name.....
Haa haa! I remember when the concept for that team was born!
I was going to buy one of those until I found out it was just a bunch of liberals trying to do a protest.
seems to me that the way anglos have incorporated Indian names into sports, cities, streets, mountains, etc is a form of high praise.....you know...the big, tough, strong fighting spirit of the Indians...but I guess that is just me.....
OK, Someone tell me when Florida State has to retire its nickname for the sake of political correctness?
FS has a lot more $$$ than ND...
How about “The Fighting Sissies”
Know how to make someone irrelevant? Never speak their name again and they become a nothing and not important in life.
Think of the Roman God’s. One day Romans stopped talking about them and they became irrelevant, disappearing from their lives.
Good Job, Sioux. You are essentially committing suicide.
There is a high school that was built in the last few years in Lincoln, NE. The school board and administrators were heavily influenced by the PC culture of UNL.
The school was named Lux (which means nothing, but doesn’t offend anyone) and their mascot is a lightening bolt, and the school colors are gray and a slightly darker shade of gray.
I guess they couldn’t bring themselves to name the school after an American Hero.
get them while you can!!!
