Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized

Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm

SHELBY COUNTY, TN – A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.

Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.

Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.

“When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.”

After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but there’s a chance that won’t happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.

“It’s not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."

King agrees. “This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.”

The dog’s owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.

If the owners refuse to put the dog down, then say, “fine, we will just sue you into oblivion”

Such idiot dog owners are probably judgment proof.

They never will. Not as glamorous.

Neville the pit bull to retire from job as bomb sniffer for WSP

By Meg Coyle, King 5 News

March 25, 2010: SEATTLE – He’s got a reputation, but he’s not living up to it. And that’s a good thing. Neville the pit bull is working the ferry lines at Seattle’s Coleman Dock.

He isn’t supposed to be here. Neville was on death row in Canada until an escape worthy of a spy novel got him across the border and into the K-9 work force. Today he protects the people who almost failed him.

“He’s the kind of dog who would take a bullet for you,” said Neville’s handler, Trooper David Dixon. “And there are people like me who had a bad idea of pit bulls in the past that may change their mind and love them because they’re great.”

“He’s so sweet. I love it when you pet him and he just smashes up against you. You feel the love,” said Diana Cameron, who works at the espresso stand on the dock.

And after five years and 21 actual finds of weapons or explosives, Neville prepares to hang up his badge for good. He is scheduled to retire in September.

Neville was the first pit bull on explosives patrol for the Washington State Patrol. And he’s helped pave the way for four others to follow in his footsteps.

WSP currently has five pit bulls working narcotics or explosives. But Trooper Dixon says it’s not so much about the breed as it is the sniffer and the disposition. Neville has a nose that knows and the temperament of a dedicated officer. Not to mention his success has helped booster the reputation of a breed known more to be fighters than crime fighters.

Trooper Dixon estimates that Neville does detection work on 150,000 vehicles a year. One dog’s life was spared to benefit the lives of countless others.

Neville will remain with Trooper Dixon after his retirement.

And whatever they’re afraid of needs to be exterminated... ya know, for the “common good.” Sound familiar?

Hypocrisy stinks from miles away.

You are smart to pick up your little dog when a pit bull comes near, especially if it’s (what I call a `yapper’) a terrier. Terriers are a doughty, aggressive breed, pound-for-pound, especially the Fox, Airedale and Bedlingtons, and Cairn/Scottie types, and the pit bull breed was bred to fight other dogs, while terriers were ratters.
I had an English bulldog and she was safe around other dogs, but my American bull will remain on a leash and harness until he’s socialized. They used this dog down south as it was brought over from England to fight, and maybe still do, while it was also a general use farm dog, and a good dog around people, even people it doesn’t know that well, unlike some smaller breeds.
(lecture over)

I had a Cairn Terrier and he was a great dog. But he wasn’t afraid of anything. He was also friendly.

You can defend your dog, but trying to defend the entire breed by telling people they are cowards, makes you look ridiculous. There are some really bad and dangerous pit bulls out there and people should be careful, not scared but careful.

My folks had a male Cairn. A trespassing German Shepherd nearly killed him but he defended his territory bravely. He had to walk around for quite a while with an `Elizabethan collar’ bumping into furniture, door frames—it really hurt his dignity.
He was fearless, or as the Scots might put it: “doughty”. Most terriers and any given pit bull are not good company.
