Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized

Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm

SHELBY COUNTY, TN – A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.

Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.

Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.

“When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.”

After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but there’s a chance that won’t happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.

“It’s not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."

King agrees. “This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.”

The dog’s owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.

Dogs are like guns. You got yer shotguns, your machine guns and your 22 shorts, and everything in between. Pit bulls are the dog equivalent of the aa-12 fully automatic shotgun. You really don’t want one of these babies pointed at you.

If the owners refuse to put the dog down, then say, “fine, we will just sue you into oblivion”

Chained to a tree in front of house - and got loose? Did the owner/s ever 'think about - 'what if?'. Lock them up - they are irresponsible and dangerous.

>>If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its’ owner. <<

That sounds reasonable. After all, a simple mauling of an 8 year old is not really enough evidence to determine whether or not the dog is vicious.

The easiest solution, of course, is to sue the owner of the dog for every dime he/she will make the rest of his/her life, plus $20 for attorney fees. Then the dog will simply starve to death because the owner cannot afford to feed it.

My brother was a city cop for 7 years before moving on to the State Police. He would tell the hoodie boys with Pit Bulls that if the dog made any move toward him whatsoever his gun was coming out and it would be fired.

along the same lines, you probably shouldn’t leave one of “these babies” around children or felons.

The mere act of chaining the dog up like that will make an already vicious animal even more vicious.

That’s how I feel. I was with all the pit-bull supporters here until I took my maltipoo on a walk around Greenlake a few weeks ago. Lots of dogs there. Some very friendly, some less so, but nothing “bad”. Then I walk towards the mens room at the south end of the lake and I get within a foot of a guy’s pit bull and it tried to tear my dog apart. If I had had a gun, I’d have shot it, no questions asked. My dog jumped out of the way just in time and was shaking and scared to death.

Next time I go there I will bring one of those mini-baseball bats. The dog leash will be in one hand and the bat in the other. Any dog that makes a move of that type towards my dog will get it right across the side of the head. Again, no questions asked.

I wouldn’t say that, but I’d be more nervous about an out of control pit bull coming after me than an out of control wiener dog. :)

Friday: Baby's testicles chewed off by pit bulls
Saturday: 6th graders attacked by pit bull, 12 injured
Sunday: Memphis girl mauled by pit bull

And those are just the stories reported.

Sure, pit bulls are "just like guns". Guns that leave their holsters by themselves and start shooting at people randomly.

Euthanize these monsters.

A pitbull is so stupid that even a baseball bat upside the head might not stop it. I saw one chew a baseball bat in half, not to mention a car bumper.

>>I think the owner is responsible.<<

I do too. But in my response, I suspect there are occasionally “responsible” owners that are sincerely shocked when their pit bull attacks.

I think owning one is a real legal risk. I do not think they should be banned, however. Like you said, nail the owner when they attack.

I will never understand being so scared of a breed of dog... I mean, really... is it because doggie has big teeth?

Yeah, my goal is not to scare it, etc. Rather, it is to disable it. And for a bat like that to work, you gotta hit it in vulnerable areas, HARD. Break legs, ribs, etc. You basically have to pry their jaw open once they get it hooked into something. And the easiest way to get it to release it’s jaw is to disable the CPU. In fact, that is about the only way.

Yes, and for sure! And these people did not recognize this? Good grief, folks - wake up to 'dog realities' if you have one; moreso; if you have one that is riled to 'madness' easily; better, for sure; not have one of these dogs to begin with.

(There is no way to trust a potentially dangerous dog or to contain said dog, safely and humanely).
