Shocker: Pittsburgh Steelers Deal Santonio Holmes To New York Jets
12th Man Rising ^ | 04.12.10

From Super Bowl hero, to trade bait, what a stunning, shocking trade that has just gone down, and the bounty is simply appalling for someone of his caliber.

This is something more akin to an April Fools prank, and frankly I am kind of ticked off we didn’t swoop in for this price.

The Steelers have agreed to trade Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth round draft pick, the 153rd pick in the draft, to be exact.

I mean, I don’t know what analysis to add except one of the most well run organizations in the league just allowed themselves to get fleeced willingly.

Like the Steelers or hate them, they do some things right and one is gettig rid of proven troubled players.

Jeff Reed and Big Ben are on thin ice too.

Reed and Big Ben are on the radar also...but Pgh sports media is still trying to confirm. Which makes wonder if this is ‘real.’

Hmmmmmmm. Speaking as a devoted masochist, I mean Cleveland Browns fan, I am wondering whether the Jets need one or two extra draft picks? Santonio (who played at OSU) could fill a the need for a stud WR on any team, but especially the Brownies. Plus he’d get the chance to put it to Pittsburgh twice a season.

Santonio trade is all over the media in Pittsburgh. They will do nothing to Ben unless he is convicted. Reed probably has one year left anyway.

Most are laughing at the Steelers. But Holmes is a repetitive troublemaker, facing a 4 game suspension for substance abuse, quite possibly facing criminal charges, and according to many in Pitt, reportedly a headcase- AND in the final year of his contract.

Not a Steelers fan but this was a smart move, even if it was for a 5th.

The Giants traded Pittsburgh for Plaxico Burress. How well did that work out?

Heh. It’s amusing watching them detail why Holmes had to go but, Roethlisberger can stay.

"The Giants traded Pittsburgh for Plaxico Burress. How well did that work out?"

Actually, the Steelers let Plax walk via free agency. But the point is still made. They made no effort to re-sign him.

Ya' know, the same thing was said when they chose to sign Hines Ward and let Plex walk. Two SuperBowls later, they were proven right. While they traded Holmes for what looks like a few practice footballs, I wouldn't be so quick to rip the Steelers. They usually do the smart thing. They re-signed Randel El to be their third down guy, Mike Wallace is going to open some eyes this year. They'll be all right if they can get their QBs head out of his butt. Something had to be done.

I don’t think so. With Mike Wallace and Antwan Randle El they should be in good shape.

Now Ben needs to learn how to keep his nose clean. He should take a few lessons on personal behavior from Sidney Crosby.

You gotta point there. They're not going to trade their two time SB winning and 100 million dollar QB away for nothing. They're willing to make a point, but not hang themselves. They can get along without Holmes, but losing Big Ben would be a killer...

It’s pretty simple, Roethlisberger has only been accused of crime by two women who can’t produce evidence of a crime. His behavior is certainly sleazy but not criminal (so far). Holmes behavior is criminal and he very recently was admitting to and advertising that behavior on his twitter page.

I want to know why Roethlisbergers’ behavior is front page news but SuperBowl MVP Holmes’ behavior is passed over by the national press.

Actually, it’s a GREAT move by the Jets, especially for the reasons that you stated. Sure, they won’t have him for the first four games of the season, but for the last twelve games, they’ll have a super-talented player who will be playing for a new contract. The Jets are built for the Super Bowl THIS YEAR, and having a hungry Holmes fills one of the crying needs, a guy who can open up their offense.

The bottom line is that the Steelers, who like to hold themselves in such high-esteem, are just like any other NFL team. Thugs and perps, albeit some more equal than others.

About the same as most anything ever works out for the Brownies. Just need to keep firearms out of the hands of children, the mentally incompetent, and former PS wide receivers (but I repeat myself).

Like I said earlier in the thread, there's a point to be made about letting go of Santonio and not letting go of Big Ben. Neither has been convicted or even charged with a crime. However, I will say that I think they do care more about their reputation than a lot of other organizations. For instance, does anyone really think Al Davis would do this with Holmes?

It is interesting that they try to maintain the appearance of the Rooneys as pure as the driven snow. The old man (Art Rooney) was supposed to have been one of the nicest men ever. But he was an inveterate gambler and had his hands in a lot of pies with political patronage and such in Pittsburgh.
