If I had to use the AK-47 it would be by Arsenal Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the most accurate AK out here. But to choose one would depend on what I need it for.

AK-47-—it’s a little bit too heavy though...

There’s lots of reasons for that.

1. AK sights suck and the monkeys using them don’t know jack
2. AK rounds won’t penetrate balistic armor vests
3. AKs are typically fired full auto and you can’t hit anything that way...not that it matters since even if you hit a US soldier with a vest on, it won’t kill him.
4. AR sights are kickass and the monkeys using them DO know jack
5. AR rounds will penetrate a vest, although the monkeys they shoot don’t typically wear a vest
6. ARs are fired single fire and are famous for one shot kills...usually head shots.

Deadliest warrior is (like mythbusters) science-ish entertainment, not actual science. Comparing the effectiveness of the AK-47 and the M-16 is subjective, and lends itself to a science-ish comparison. Does the environment require accuracy or distance to target? M-16 is preferred. Is the weapon going to be operated in non-urban environments or for extended periods without opportunity to field-strip and clean? Advantage AK. In the haphazard melee that Deadliest warrior presents, I’d lean toward an AK only because of its “spray and pray” feature.

Bingo! You have identified the key problem with this show. This is why the Taliban "loses" in this episode--because of the nature of the battle. The same thing is true of the Green Beret vs. Spetznaz and Spartan vs. Ninja episodes. The ninja is forced to fight a Spartan hoplite in an open fight. At the end, one of the ninja team members then said something like: "well the ninja in real life would have run away and then come back later to kill the Spartan in his sleep." And that was my point.

I'm surprised at Spike TV. Perhaps the rifle that came to be most associated with the IRA was the AR18...kind of an early effort to correct some of the M16's deficiencies...

An issue they didn’t address well: How many rounds can you hump around and fire before your riffle becomes an expensive club (what a riffle without ammo is)? You can carry a LOT more AR-15 or M-4 rounds than AK-47 rounds. So if you don’t have great resupply or are going to be in the field a long time, the AR-15 or M-4 wins hands down.

Iraqis won’t carry an AK if they have a choice. ARs are the cadilac of assault rifles. Plus they’re modular and easily modified.

I never shot an AR15 that didn't jam.

What an idiotic statement, or writer.

I shot the M-16 at 500 yards and couldn’t read the target numbers, had a spotter. Put 8 rounds in a 10 inch circle. As for jamming, it don’t handle the dirt very well. Have to keep the ejection port closed.

Beyond 150 yards, you had better have an AR.

I can keep an AR clean and functional. I can’t make an AK get hits at medium to long range.

My theory on why the AR seems so accurate is two fold: amazingly precise sights that are amazingly easy for the eyes to use. And recoil. The super soft recoil makes it effortless to shoot and shoot and shoot. There is nothing that compares.

Given the choice, I'd take the M16. But I'd prefer one of these:

Bullpup configuration, .308 caliber, 18" barrel, what's not to like? CQB from the bullpup (26" OAL), and 600m effective range for reaching out and touching someone WAY out there.

I had a M-16 jam a round up over the air tube while locked in the bolt face. Thing was dam hard to get unjammed.

Wow, 30+ posts and there hasn’t been a 5.56 vs. 7.62 argument yet.

I have fired about a zillion rounds and not had that happen.

But an AK still won’t hit S#!+ at 200+ yards.

So as long as you are guaranteed to never have somebody threatening you from over 200 yards away, AKs are just fine.

I completely agree with you. They aren't comparing apples to apples. While I sometimes watch it for some entertainment value, if most anything else is on, I change channels.

Probably because both rounds have proven to drop men when they hit target. Hard to argue with casualties from rifle shots!

Lots of more reasons too. Straight line recoil from barrel to stock. The much-maligned gas impingement system means no steel op rod clanging back and forth. Etc.

I know crazy jam never saw it again. Never saw very many M-16 jams either. It’ a great rifle if you know how to maintain it.
