Pit Bull Attacks Two German Shepherd Dogs In Unadilla Township

April 17, 2010

4/17/10 - A Pit Bull was seized by Livingston County Animal Control after attacking two German Shepherd dogs. On Thursday at 10:50 a.m., Unadilla Township Police were called out to an East Trebesh Drive home in response to a dog attack. A man reported that his neighbor’s Pit Bull managed to get out of its fenced-in yard and attacked his two German Shepherds. One received life-threatening injuries to his neck while the second also had serious injuries. Due to the vicious nature of the attack, and the fact that the Pit Bull didn’t have a license or its vaccination shots, it was seized by Animal Control. Police are seeking charges against the 19-year-old owner for failing to control a vicious dog, and a report has been submitted to the Livingston County Prosecutor's office for review and possible charges. Open question to all FReepers: Is there a breed of dog that can actually deal with an agressive pit bull attack? I am thinking Irish Wolf Hound or Rhodesian Ridgeback, but they are so huge and expensive to maintain.

I would suggest a 45ACP.

no way can an Irish Wolfhound or Ridgeback handle a trained male pitbull in a dogfight

though the Ridgeback would fare better...Irish Wolfies while magnificent creatures are coursers and have had their once more aggressive nature bred out more so

the most likely dog to handle a Pit would be either a Leopard Catahoula or a big Staffie or a Standard American Bulldog..which I own though that had NOTHING to do with my choice...I just always wanted one ...they are the old Southern hunt and catch bulldog you see in all the old romantic landscapes of the late 1700s and early 1800s which were revived 40 years ago and split into the Southern Scott mastiff nosed and the bulkier wrinkled Johnson Classic style...mine is black with long snapper tail and floppy laid back ears and a lippy snout...and sorta lanky but powerful..27 inches withers and 130 lbs at 2-3 years maturity..pic of his mirror image daddy on my profile page

mine is very human friendly but tough as nails and strong as a gargoyle and built like one too...70 lbs at 7 months...but beware they are a LOT to handle and need a lot of family time and running and cannot be left with lapdogs...EXTREMELY underfoot family dogs....of all the large guard breeds I've owned I've never had one that wants to be piled up with us 24-7 so much...doesn't run off more than 30-40 yards on out back 10

other than that Dogos probably might survive too against a Pit...

Caucasian mountain dog too

Pitbulls are the preeminent dog fighter which is not a reason for anyone to own one...I loathe sport dog fighting...it is brutal and Godawful

Chet hates Pits...he has reasons I reckon but I don't share it

one should remember that just because a dog like a Pit is a strong dog fighter does not translate into a potent mankiller or guard...if it did then more highly trained perimeter dogs would be Pits instead of Shepherds, Rotts , and Dobies....

a true pitbull is only around 55-60 pounds as a male and rangy...many folks now have crossed them with bigger bulldogs or Rotts to make a bigger Pit...but from what I read the stamina question still makes the rangier smaller Pits more potent dogfighters...for what that is worth....I live in semi rural Tennessee and do venture into the mountains and know real hillbillies and have been told though I refuse to attend a dog fight

don't mind cock fights though...I just don't think man's best friend or even cats should be abused

needless to say toddlers should not be unsupervised around the dogs I've mentioned...or any dog really but larger dogs can inflict mortal injury so much quicker...that is common sense

I did not get a Pit to replace our Dobie because my wife was wary...and it was not a battle worth fighting and besides we narrowed it down to her approval for either a Cane Corso, Anatolian Shepherd or American Bulldog...all pretty damned good choices for a mommy to suggest...we did not want to try to replace our beloved Dobie with another and we waited a few years for baby to get past 3

that is a puppy too...look at the paws...they get very big

mine is a hair snoutier...but liver lipped too..many are now Johnson-Scott hybrids

mine is really kind of hound doggie..not an alarmist about people...course he still young

but my Dobie at 7 months was a sentry already

I got me an American Bulldog mix, the mother looked alot like the Am Bulldog picture that Chet posted above, the father was, get this, and Am Bulldog/Sheltie mix?! The 1/4 Sheltie in her makes her a bit small (55-60 lbs full grown), but this is the strongest dog I have ever owned. Can be vicious too. Honestly, I dont let that dog out without strict supervision. She loooooves people, once she gets to know them, and is hard to keep off of our bed at night, though we insist.

I think Am Bulldogs, and maybe a Rot would fare well against a pit, the thing is, those trained, bred, pit-figher bulls are simply nuts... maybe a mutated dachund, 60 lbs or more, would fare well..

a fight trained pitbull is evry bit as dangerous as Chet says...I can’t argue that.

I am unfortunately a bit familiar with such matters given where I live and travel on my business days.

Training pits to fight makes monsters.

I have seen a lot of regular dogfights over bitches as a boy back before leash laws and we would watch them or spray water at them.

An ABM or Rottie has more leg exposed than a pit does...a smart pit will crack that leg first or tear out that exposed belly under taller legs than a squaty pit has...and well...you can guess the rest.

No way would I have a rescued true fighting pit around anyone but the owner rescuer...

that’s funny..dang Shelties are active too...our ABD is very active

but he loves to just be right with us....right now is on his 150 foot hang lead while I think about electric fence or fenced run which I know he will dig up but I guarantee he is staring at the back door waiting for wifey to come fetch him...if I don’t block the stairs he will go up to the boy’s room and get on their beds with them...and maybe poop in guest room for good measure...he has big cage in the back door foyer...my vet’s property backs up to mine...she told us we better get a cage...she was right

Pit Bull saves 2 women from deadly cobra, dies wagging his tail

And what would the headline have been if the snake didn't kill the pit bull?

How about: After Killing Snake, Pit Bull Eats 2 Women
