5-year-old mauled by pit bull in Hurricane

April 20, 2010

HURRICANE -- Many owners of American pit bull terriers say the dogs get a bad rap, that they can be as sweet as any other breed and can make great family pets. But if a pit bull attacks, one Utah mother says the results can be devastating.

A pit bull mauled Katie Weeks' 5-year-old daughter, Saleena Wickward, in Hurricane Monday night. The little girl is now recovering from reconstructive facial surgery.

"She's already asked her mom for a mirror, and we're waiting on that," Weeks says.

Right now, Saleena's face only resembles what she used to look like: swelling, stitches and staples consume her innocent face.

"I was so afraid to walk into that room and see my little girl because I just thought she would never look the same again," Weeks says.

But she says her daughter already looks better than she did right after the attack.

It happened Monday night in Hurricane around 5:30. Weeks says her daughter wandered to the next yard over to catch a caterpillar.

According to the dog owner, Saleena was throwing rocks at the pit bull. Then, it lunged at her face.

"The dog was on a chain, but he grabbed her and didn't let go," Weeks says.

The owner had to pry the jaws off of Saleena's head. Neighbors called 911.

Saleena stayed conscious while waiting for an ambulance.

"We got a towel and pushed the skin up against her, and just wrapped it around and held it there until 911 got there, and just rocked her and tried to comfort her the best we could," Weeks says.

At Dixie Regional Medical Center, the 5-year-old had six and a half hours of reconstructive surgery. Two plastic surgeons helped put Saleena's face back together.

Stitches go from the middle of her lip, to her nose and cheek, then around her ear. A plate and screw are stabilizing her fractured cheek.

Now, doctors and family members will have to wait to see if there's any nerve damage. In the meantime, weeks says her emotions are all over the place.

"Fear, hope, more prayers than I've ever said in my life," she says.

The dog owner didn't want to comment. Weeks doesn't place blame on the owner. She says the dog had played with her kids before.

Hurricane police say the pit bull is with animal control.

I am against breed bans and have always been against them because they're counter to conservative principle. I'm against them also because it would be a slippery slope. Pit bulls today, Jack Russell terriers tomorrow. Dogs are a gift from God, even pit bulls.

The fact still remains, however, that with today's thoroughly feminized, emotionalized approach to pets, pit bulls pose a serious problem and denying it is the most likely way to bring about breed bans. When/if breed bans happen, pit bull defenders will be as much to blame as anyone. The first step to solving a problem is admitting that it exists. Pit bull lovers waste all their energy on denying the problem and exert next to nothing on recognizing the problem and trying to do something to solve it.

Here's the deal. There aren't Hippo Rescue places all over the United States encouraging regular people to adopt them into neighborhoods where innocent neighbors are as much at risk as the adopters.

Hippos don't kill little old ladies minding their own business weeding flowerbeds in their own yards. Hippos aren't owned by immature kids in gang neighborhoods who don't know their own limitations but instead want to impress their peers with their powerful pets.

I LOVE chihuahua rescues. If you adopt a chihuahua and are a lousy "pet parent" and can't control the dog, at MOST you'll be a minor pain in the butt to friends, neighbors, and relatives.

I HATE pit bull rescues and think the clowns that operate them should be held financially accountable for any injuries on people from a dog adopted through their rescues. If you adopt a pit bull and are a lousy doggy "mommy" or doggy "daddy," you pose a potentially lethal danger not just to yourself and those who live in your house, but to all your neighbors.

The liberal mindest that "if you just give these dogs a chance, if you just treat them nicely, they'll be good!" dominates in the pit bull defender mindset. It's as if they think that it's "doggy racism" to acknowledge that a poorly-trained pit bull is whole helluva lot more dangerous than a poorly trained basset hound.

I don't know what the answer is, and I really, really HATE the whole idea of breed banning. I DO know that emotional people think "dogs are people, too." They're wrong -- people are people; dogs are dogs. Treat them with dignity and respect -- expecting a dog bred to hold a serious post, to have a serious job of being a warrior protector, to lower itself to being a mere pet, the family's "little buddy" insults that dog's dignity. Its as wrong -- I would even say immoral -- as expecting an Australian cow dog to be a pet in a city apartment. It is cruel to the animal and disrespects its dignity. IN THE CASE OF THE PIT BULL, IT CAN ALSO BE DEADLY DANGEROUS.

The hippo response on pit bull threads is one more confirmation of the fact that pit bull "lovers" are too wrapped up in a kind of feminized "pet parent" emotion to be logical in facing up to, let alone coming up with a viable solution to, the pit bull problem.

I was reading what you wrote, agreeing with some of it, and marveling at the fact that you seem to have missed the reductio ad absurdum being used in this instance.

(sigh!) I guess we'll just have to tag every joke, every tongue-in-cheek moment and every nuance for the humor impaired. >>The previous 22 words constituted biting sarcasm<<

Then, in all seriousness, you wrote this:

"The hippo response on pit bull threads is one more confirmation of the fact that pit bull "lovers" are too wrapped up in a kind of feminized "pet parent" emotion to be logical in facing up to, let alone coming up with a viable solution to, the pit bull problem"

Did you actually read my last post? Or did you simply skip from the part about the Hippos to the picture at the bottom, and assume that I had nothing else to say?

Whatever the disconnect, there were quite a few things I said about responsible ownership, appropriate penalties, controlling breeding and proper parenting that went right by you on the speeding logic train.

One more thing. If you took the time to get to know the people on the Hippo List, I don't think you'll find even one example of over emotionalized "pet parenting" much less any liberal mindsets.

That's because they do drugs and join political groups that support homosexual politics.

Correcting your typo doesn’t negate the predictably ludicrous ‘keyboard gunslinger’ factor.

So....how many of your neighbor’s dogs have you “killed with a heart like arctic ice” this week?

Is this your first time on a “Chet99 Pit Bull Pogrom” thread?

Other than posting dozens of other “gory wild animal attacks” stories, *this* is what gives him his ya-yas.

No matter how many people post stories about *other* breeds attacking/biting/killing people, he mainly focuses on pit/bully type breeds.
[or any variation/mix, thereof]

We’re either talking dangerous obsession, perverse attraction or hysterical phobia, here.
[perhaps an overlapping of all three]

The fact of the matter is, if *none* of *us* come in and ‘feed him” by smacking him around, his average thread length is 8-20 posts, *if* he’s lucky.
[people seem to be either growing bored of his mania or are finally figuring out his neuroses]

This makes me suspect he’s a lonely weirdo who’s found the perfect way to get himself some “company” as he sits alone in his mom’s basement, eating Cheetos with one hand and copying/pasting with the other.

He disregards the inconvenient fact that very small breeds have maimed/mutilated/killed small children and babies.

They do not garner near the sensationalism that pits do therefore, do not fit his agenda.

Considering that a statistically *much* smaller number of hippos inhabit a *vastly* smaller geographic/sparsely populated area yet kill at *least* 10 times more people per year, you’d think, if human life were of such a great concern to him, he’d be posting *those* stories, wouldn’t you?

That’s why the hippos symbolize hypocrisy, pure and simple.

That’s why the “Pippos” [pit hippos] will always be wherever Chet and his wanton dog killing sycophants will be.

We DO care very much about and pray for the victims of dog attacks...and that includes the -dumb animals- who commit the attacks, *without* the “evil” anthropomorphic intent generally attributed to them.

WE blame the people who own/abused/mistrained/unleashed the dogs in the first place.

The responsibility for any animal attack lies first and foremost with the [theoretically] “smarter” owner.

This means I can’t be friends with you two, any more.

I had no idea that you were both homo-loving, hippy dope fiends.

Gee.

Wouldn’t it be funny if somebody found out [or already knew] who/where you are and reported you to the police?

In many states, those acts are now considered felonies.

To those of you who are aware of the unbelievably agonizing deaths both “methods” inflict upon *any* animal who may happen to consume those substances, [such as other completely innocent dogs, cats and hapless wildlife] consider now what ~kind~ of “person” supports Chet’s agenda.

[and you were quoted in entirety so that you can’t ask the mods to pull that heinous, self-incriminating post]

Thanks for making it!
