AMrican Idol "Gives Back" charity. A COMMENT

In watching American Idol this evening, something struck me that I wondered if others noticed.

Tonight was charity night known as American Idol Gives Back! Obviously, the goal is to give back and help others in need.

The show started off with a message from the Obama's.

One of the featured people in need was a single mother and children, one of whom was burned by a neighborhood kid.

While they were showing pictures of this family in need of financial assistance, I could not help but notice a CELL PHONE in the child's lap and a CELL PHONE EARPIECE in his ear.

Did anyone notice this? I am all for asissting people who need help, but dont tell me that you are that poor when you have a new cell phone in your hands and bluetooth headset in your ear!

Then, another family from California was shown. The father is a teacher in California. They showed the fanily in their home which did not look like they were poverty stricken, nice fireplace, living room etc. Was not a palace, but certainly not a home of a family in poverty.

How is someone on a teacher salary in California classified as poverty?

Am I wrong here?

Well, I have to say...their personal situation WAS none of my business...but that changed when they decided to “share” their “plight” and beg for a handout from ME. Now, it IS my business to question what their personal finances are like before I agree to subsidize them.

LOL! I remember a friend giving me packages of macaroni on the street, because she knew we had no food. So there!

Do you remember the old SNL skit with Gilda Radner, with the two Jewish women arguing over who got the cheaper blouse? One says she got it cheaper than the other, then one got it at a rummage sale, then one was PAID to take it away!

If anyone knows where that one is, let me know. I’d love to get the dialogue.

” I can’t believe what is considered poverty nowadays, and what people will ask handouts for.”

Well stated.

They left out the middle eastern countries where many live in graveyards.... Egypt for example.....

The cell phones, video games on the TV don’t qualify as poverty stricken to me.

Also, I was waiting for any of the Uber $$$$ earners to state, “ and I have just given 1 million dollars ( a mere pittance of my annual take) to this worthy cause....”

I know someone who took in several Russian orphans just a few years ago. They grew up in a house with no windows or doors, and never had enough. When they first came to live here, I remember they would sit out on the lawn and just watch the house lights - they were so fascinated by a house that had electricity.

EI: ‘E was right. I was happier then and I had NOTHIN’. We used to live in this tiiiny old house, with greaaaaat big holes in the roof.

GC: House? You were lucky to have a HOUSE! We used to live in one room, all hundred and twenty-six of us, no furniture. Half the floor was missing; we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of FALLING!

TG: You were lucky to have a ROOM! *We* used to have to live in a corridor!

MP: Ohhhh we used to DREAM of livin’ in a corridor! Woulda’ been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House!? Hmph.

EI: Well when I say “house” it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpolin, but it was a house to US.

GC: We were evicted from *our* hole in the ground; we had to go and live in a lake!

TG: You were lucky to have a LAKE! There were a hundred and sixty of us living in a small shoebox in the middle of the road.

MP: Cardboard box?

TG: Aye.

MP: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o’clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!
