CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- A Clarksville pet owner said a police officer went too far when he shot her dog.
Police said they received a call that the dog, a pit bull, was attacking two children getting off their school bus. "The dog was snarling, growling, showing teeth," said Officer Jim Knoll of the Clarksville Police Department. The officer who responded said the dog ran at him, so he shot it in the shoulder. "In this particular situation, the officer thought the animal was going to bite him, cause him serious bodily harm, so he defended himself," said Knoll.
Nakia Jones said her dog was off its leash but she said there's no proof anyone was in danger. Jones said the dog didn't bite anyone, and the police report doesn't say anything about anyone being bitten. "The blood, just coming and just kept coming. All he could do was just lay down," said Jones. "Why shoot the dog? Why? Yeah, he was loose or whatever, but he could have called Animal Control." "I really feel bad for that dog, and it tears my heart up," said neighbor Gregory Hooper. "I know it's a pretty nice dog. I mean, I probably could walk up right now and pet him. Look, his tail is wagging. It lets you know right there he's not an aggressive dog." Police don't know who the kids were.
Jones said the dog, Cane, was rescued from an abusive home.
Jones was cited for not having dog on a leash. She said she plans to sue. "You don't have time to sit there and think, 'Well, is this animal going to bite me? Is this animal not going to bite me?'" said Knoll. "The animal is charging you, and you think it's going to bite you, then you need to take appropriate action as quickly as you can." The Clarksville Police Department has launched an internal investigation to determine if the officer made the appropriate choice.
All Pit Bulls go to Hell.
Yeah, because a barking snarling pit bull runing at you is a safe as a stuffed wabbit!
My dog is already in Phoenix. Guess that counts.
I have to say, I agree. I am getting so tired of seeing these stories of these animals attacking people. And, then hear the sob-stories of how we shouldn’t take any action against them after they have maimed/killed someone. It is nuts. The dog is dangerous. He has proven he is dangerous by his actions. The owner is irresponsible. If she wanted this dog, it is her responsibility to make sure that this animal is leashed at all times when they are out of doors. I don’t care what anyone says, this breed is unpredictable. I saw an insurance table once about which breeds were responsible for what percentage of dog attacks, and pit bulls were far and away the worst offenders.
That's a bomb waiting to go off.
Given what’s in the news article, I’d go with the cop on this one.
I'm sorry she lost her dog, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that there's a history of it running loose, and one of the neighbors just got sick of it. A dog off-leash is fair game.
Maintain control of your dog. It’s your responsibility.
What's that suppose to mean?
“Yeah, because a barking snarling pit bull runing at you is a safe as a stuffed wabbit!”
a barking snarling pit bull that was rescued from an abusive home. What a combo.
Shoot to kill, IMHO.
They could only be worse if they were poisonous.
So the officer shot the dog, the neighbor says it’s a nice dog, no one knows who the kids were and no one but the officer says in the article it’s aggressive. Hmmmmm.
This is why I carry “Bear” pepper spray with me when I walk my 10 pound dog.
The, “not on a leash but won’t hurt you” excuse only goes so far. I walk with the spray and warn the owner to get the dog or it’s sprayed. Luckily, my dog is breed for agility and can most likely outrun any dog, but my daughters aren’t and can easily be hurt by someone’s “just a puppy”.
The neighbor says “Look, his tail is wagging. It lets you know right there he’s not an aggressive dog.”
High held tails wagging are a sign of aggression.
The article says the dog was snarling and charging, BUT wasn’t on a lead.
I wouldn’t have taken a chance either if I were the Officer.
If the lady loved her dog, she would have followed the leash laws.
Pit bulls — shoot the dogs, hang the owners.
I do not carry pepper spray, but I do carry a Smith & Wesson .38 Airweight when I walk my 30 pound Corgi. People who leave their dogs off the leash do not deserve to have dogs, IMO. I seldom see loose dogs, but if one does show up and attack me or my dog, he's going down.
I have no sympathy for the dog owner in this story, who IMO is the one responsible for the dog being shot.
This is a bad article that’s short on facts. But it says “pit bull” in the article. That’s enough for most people. Oh well.
All I needed to read from this story was the name Nakia and loose pitbull.
Tomorrow we’ll read about a racist white cop who shot some poor minorities’ beloved pet. Bet he was a teabagger too!
99% of those dogs should be destroyed, as they always seem to wind up with the very people who shouldn’t be allowed raise a Chia Pet, let alone a dog bred for violent potential.
FWIW...These are the same people whose offspring wind up in our prisons for committing vicious crimes...
Coincidence?
Hmmm...
