Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.
Perry says he needed just one shot from his laser-sighted pistol to take down a coyote that was menacing his dog during an early morning jog in an undeveloped area near Austin.

.380 Ruger pistol.
“Adios, MoFo!”
Good for you, Guv. Practical application of the 2nd Amendment. Texas should join AZ in open carry legislation.
.380 would not be my choice, but in an urban environment it might make sense. With the right load, it is quite effective and is a small package.
Ruger makes a really fine gun. Everything Bill Ruger makes is simple and effective.
Rick grew up here in Haskell County. Like most of us, guns and hunting was something that is very natural. It has always been that way. Expect that to continue.
"(groaning) Oh, this'll stop a charging gerbil at ten paces!"
Wonder how many shots it took before the oversized bb's stung the coyote / chihuahua to death.
One shot, one kill. Good shooting.
We normally use hollowpoint 22LR on coyotes. .380 would quite efffective.
Would not work around here. Except maybe a chipmunk, since that is the only small-sized creatures we have.
Not here. We have things like Silver Foxes of a size that if not downright laughing at .22s then run far enough away that you will never find them if they do expire. A .380 would be questionable at best, and from what little experience I have had of them they appear to be pretty much a lightweight / cutdown .38 with the powder thrust of a .22 round. I tend to think of them as a last-chance or no-other-choice available round.
SKS is a nice round, but have to admit - not a good idea to mess with Texas! Way to go governor...lead by by example!
I’m surprised the libs in Austin aren’t screaming to High Heaven. Not sure if it’s still going on or not but the city of Austin hired a guy to kill wild pigs running lose around town and required he use a bow and arrow only.
.380 will work in many situations.
Even a .22 works better than most people think in the right hands.
Did you see the small caliber round the Jihadi, Nidal Hasan, used at Ft. Hood. (FN Five-seven w/5.7 mm (.224 in) bullet)
Shot placement.
Shot placement.
Shot placement.
I practice with my .380 Sig to target the head, specifically the nose. Its inherently light recoil makes that pretty easy inside of 15 feet or so.
I can dump a magazine one handed at that distance inside of an area the size of the palm of my hand. That'll stop anybody toot sweet.
Would I prefer carrying something bigger? Sure. But in my State CC is strictly verboten for the 'proles so I bought something inexpensive on the used market and take my chances.
I'm not losing my Commander to some flatfoot. On the other hand I'm not going into monkey country unarmed.
So I made a decision and picked up something that's the bare minimum, easily concealable, and then I practiced with it until I can put 3 up a bad guys nostrils before he knows what hit him.

"The Vélodog revolvers were small pocket pistols intended for the protection of cyclists and hikers against savage dogs, typically firing five or six shots, and fitted with a short barrel and folding trigger. They were initially chambered in 5.5mm Vélodog or .22 long rifle, but later examples are found in 6.35mm Browning/.25 ACP and 7.65mm Browning/.32 ACP calibre."
I think a .380 would work just fine (although I would personally prefer a .38 Special or 9mm Parabellum, with appropriate loads)...
Adios, coyote!
;>)
Yar, I noticed that. Noticed as well that he pretty much had to get so close to use it that if not point-blank range was required then multiple rounds were.
I friend of mine was killed when he was accidently shot in the stomach from 5 feet with a .22 pistol. The bullet rattled around his midsection and ground up his innards. He dies within 20 minutes.
Then you pretty much agree with My no-other-choice position. I understand and agree on why you would make your choice in the direction you did.
I normally do not have to worry about a hidden asset for two-legged vermin where I am at. Shot placement on smaller (or larger), four-legged moving targets just does not lend itself well to tiny calibre solutions.
Necessity has driven me to do so. I'm a resident of Illinois after all.
I normally do not have to worry about a hidden asset for two-legged vermin where I am at.
You must live in one of the remaining Civilized portions of California. I envy you. That's not legally possible under almost any circumstances here. Hence my choice.
I've also got a couple other low-cost firearms that work for the purpose. Perhaps my favorite is my Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 spl. I picked that up for less than $200. That round packs all the punch of a .45 ACP and the Bulldog is a nice, concealable package that goes "bang" every single time.
I'd love to live in a State that respected my Human Rights but since I'm stuck here for more reasons than I care to enumerate here I have made what I consider to be the best compromises possible.
It is hard to believe that my in-laws who reside in NorCal have a better odds of getting a CC issued than I do.
But back to my point. I've always felt that a .380 on your belt is far better than the .45 you left at home because it was too heavy, couldn't be concealed under what the weather conditions dictated your clothing would be, etc etc etc.
Just my opinion of course.
Nice chatting with you.
Best,
L
