SIERRA VISTA Responding to recent news reports, both citing anonymous sources claiming to be involved in the investigation, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever said that his office had no new information regarding any possible suspect in the shooting death of Douglas-area rancher Robert Krentz.
All that I can say is that nothing has changed from our original release, and that is that we tracked the suspect from the scene of the murder to the Mexican border, Dever said. We do have some information that suggests that he was a scout for a smuggling organization. Thats about it.
On Monday, the Associated Press reported that the suspect was a Mexican who was recently in the United States, while the Arizona Daily Star reported that investigators were focusing on a suspect currently within the country.
A statement from the sheriffs office states that they have no suspect information regarding nationality or gender.
Dever said that any information regarding the investigation was to come from the sheriffs office.(Emphasis added - HJ)
All participating agencies have committed to me that any release of information about the investigation will come out of our office, he said.
On March 27, Krentz was shot while checking fence lines on his 35,000-acre ranch northeast of Douglas. Evidence at the scene suggests he managed to drive his all-terrain vehicle a short distance away before he lost consciousness and died.
The previous day, Krentzs brother contacted Border Patrol agents regarding a group of drug smugglers on the ranch, resulting in the arrest of eight people and the seizure of more than 250 pounds of marijuana.
