He's a big dog -- still skinny with ribs and hip bones protruding -- but big nonetheless. He's gained almost 30 pounds in 30 days.
And he's happy. The ears were loose, the tail wagged eagerly, and his head was butting into hands for affection.
Nizato was fired from her job after she was arrested April 16. She has been charged with one felony count of animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count of failure to provide care. She will be arraigned on those charges Wednesday (May 12) at the Bellflower Courthouse.
Dr. Bill Grant came out to give us a medical update (and get some love from Courage, too). The vet says Courage is doing "quite well," and his only issue is a slight case of anemia. He's being treated with an oral hematinic to help boost his red-blood cell count.
Courage also has a new "brother," also a German shepherd, and a new family. A GSROC volunteer -- not Shawn Hollub -- who has been caring for Courage since he was well enough to leave the hospital, is his new owner. She has asked to remain anonymous.

Very Nice!!
Glad this beautiful dog has survived and been given a new home!
Good news on Courage the neglected German Shepherd in OC CA.
I just can’t understand how the former owner could do this. I can see being too broke to feed the dog, but why keep it tied and let it starve? If it was running free it could scavenge for scraps or be picked up and taken care of. It has to be a matter of cruelty.
THE SOUL OF THE DOG
Every dog must have a soul
Somewhere deep inside
Where all his hurts and grievances
Are buried with his pride.
Where he decides the good and bad,
The wrong way from the right,
And where his judgment carefully
Is hidden from our sight.
A dog must have a secret place
Where every thought abides,
A sort of close acquaintance that
He trusts in and confides.
And when accused unjustly for
Himself, He cannot speak,
Rebuked, He finds within his soul
The comfort he must seek.
He’ll love, tho ‘he is unloved,
And he’ll serve tho ‘badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away
The times when he’s abused.
Altho’ his heart may break in two
His love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog
An understanding Soul!

Just beautiful.
It’s a very special poem to me because of all the dogs I’ve had in my lifetime, only 2 *weren’t* somebody else’s “wrecked rejects”, thrown away for reasons I could never fathom.
They were all my best friends and wonderful, loving, loyal companions.
There wasn’t a single one of them that I could ever see ~any~ reason why they’d been tossed aside like trash.
I have had the poem emailed all over the country!
Somwhere, [very beautiful, I hope] my beloved Minny and Tito are smiling upon you and your own good soul.
I know of a woman who thinks dogs are people and she can treat people like dogs. If the dog does not come in when she calls it she might lock it up in a dark garage for an entire day.
She has about a total of 15 dogs and cats and 4 of the cats literally never leave the laundry room ‘for their own protection’. The other cats were in cages.
She does make sure they are fed and watered though.
