Ridley Scott's Robin Hood ("a love letter to the Tea Party..")

Is it an accident that Ridley Scott's Robin Hood plays like a rousing love letter to the Tea Party movement? It's certainly something of a surprise. When the movie was announced in 2007 with the title Nottingham, reports suggested that it would sympathize with the normally vilified Sheriff of Nottingham as a man torn between two extremes: the corrupt tax-happy monarchy, and Robin Hood himself, who in this version would be a self-serving rabble-rouser who'd play on the emotions of the struggling public to incite anarchy. Russell Crowe was at first cast as the sheriff; a year later, Scott told MTV News that his frequent leading man would play both the famed outlaw and his lawman rival, to better reveal the affinities between the two.

The film Scott ended up making is called Robin Hood, the sheriff's role is minimal, and Crowe plays only the title character, whose ability to mobilize commoners with empty, anti-government rhetoric equating taxation with slavery is posited as a virtue.

This reminds me of when “The Patriot” came out 10 years ago.

This is a surprise.

The usual depiction of Robin Hood is the central theme in socialism: steal from the rich and give to the poor

I will wait for other reviews, preferably from Freepers who have seen the movie

I’ve been looking forward to this movie for a while. I like Scott, I like Crowe .. and Robin Hood is a conservative story if there ever was one. The “King”, Prince and tax collector are the bad guys ... and the hero is an armed vigilante tax cutter, charitable giver, and Christian warrior.

“Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions.”

Yes, they do hate movies that counter their commie propaganda ever so slightly don’t they?

And unwittingly creating mass interest, I hope. As said earlier, I'll wait for it on DVD/BlueRay. Might even buy it...

whose ability to mobilize commoners with empty, anti-government rhetoric equating taxation with slavery is posited as a virtue.

This is rich. If this theme of a hero fighting over-taxation and burdensome government has been around in lore and literature since the 13th century, doesn't this writer think there might be some truth there? And that there is virtue in fighting it?

Ridley Scott could have retired after Alien and his career
as a geat director would have been secure. He is great. Blade Runner was also excellent and his Apple ad remains a classic.

Crowe is a great actor, does not spew any left wing crap and appears to be a pretty good dad to his kids.

I assume no Opie Ronnie Howard or Brain Glazer involvement - lib scum. Opie and Andy are lib scum. I bet Clint Howard is not a lib.

A number of reviews mention the tea parties...but yes, we will have to see what Scott has done to the story.

Robin Hood didn’t “Redistribute the wealth” from “rich guys”, he took back the high taxes that the governing bodies had collected and gave THAT back to the people.

What next? Will they read Aesop’s fable about the Ant and the Grasshopper and realize that squandering your time in unproductive pursuits will not protect your when times get lean?

Robin Hood is frequently hyped as a case for redistributive socialism: stealing from the rich to give to the poor.

Except. It’s not.

Robin Hood is a story of fighting back against an oppressive government: taking back from GOVERNMENT what it stole from the people to give it BACK to its rightful owners.

Robin Hood is a story about restoring liberty and undermining oppressive GOVERNMENT. It is the very antithesis of some socialist paradigm story.

“Instead of robbing from the rich to give to the poor, this Robin Hood preaches about “liberty” and the rights of the individual”

You can almost hear the gaskets being blown in the White House and Capital Building.

This movie is to be the first (before the other times portrayed in the other Robin Hoods); and is to explain his character and how it developed.

I expect to like it. we have few hero’s to be a model for us anymore. If any. Especially for the young among us.

Singers : We sang... he steals from the poor and gives to the rich?

Moore : Wait a tic ... blimey, this redistribution of wealth is trickier than I thought.
