Please refer back to the first comment I made, which mentioned specifically how my comments were not meant to knock the thread, and which appreciated tioga’s work. I know that there are people whose rhetorical style it is to say, “I don’t mean to call say you smell bad, but pee-yoo!” I am not such. I mean what I write. I’m just adding to that my dislike for pretense. It seemed relevant to some, since a stated purpose of the thread is to ease effective communication.

Eloquence does not mean simple-minded language. The best word may be a relatively unfamiliar one. The Douay-Rheims bible, for instance, retains many “Latinisms,” so that the reader may learn the precise theological concept through learning the word.

Further, I recognize that sometimes, it’s fun to use a newly learnt word.

I was only expressing why you’d never catch me using Brobdingnagian.

NO BARKING! :-) However, he did shriek like the banshee when I stepped on the end of the nylon lead I have attached to his harness, and jumped straight into the air. We have thunder rumbling and he is acting a little agitated right now.

Is Simon Monjack a musician, because he sure as hell ain’t a celebrity. In a given week, you’re likely to find at least 3 obituaries make the main page of USA Today. Simon Monjack’s passing was hardly Brobd — nah, huge — news. And I’d have to guess you’re a Slipknot fan?

but it is helpful to know what it means, should you encounter it somewhere. no offense taken, we are merely explaining why we feature words of all sorts, not just to further effective communication, but because we like to MESS WITH THEM! ; )

I tend to agree. Prior to lying about it, he did the right thing....

clearly there have been flurries of phone calls going back and forth between all of the parties here, trying to line up the story.

I guess this thread just isn’t for you. We like words here.......big ones, complicated ones....as long as it’s in a real dictionary we WILL use it.

He's a screenwriter, producer and director and was married to Brittany Murphy. And yes I AM a Slipknot fan. And Saliva, Metallica, Godsmack, And just about any other metal band. Here's a picture I took at a Saliva concert last year and yes I was on the front row.

Exactly, which is part of why I keep saying that I don’t mean to knock the thread or anyone involved!

Don’t mind us, we don’t mean to jump you; but we DO have people who just come onto the thread and start ragging on the word choice or being otherwise critical and so we tend to react when we think that’s what’s going on.

Do you watch 30 Rock? I happened to see it for the ONLY time last night - probably a rerun - but I didn't think it was funny at all. Does it have to grow on you?

Of course I didn't even know the premise of the show at all so to learn that the sleazy fat guy is pretending to be a creepy version of a conservative and the Palin wannabe is a dufus kind of surprised me.

I have seen it on occasion, and sometimes it is really funny. Not Modern Family funny, but I’ve seen worse.

I wonder how those same freepers would react if Mo Dowd was all set to marry a guy in his late 20’s.

I love Modern Family - lol So did I get the premise of the show right? He’s a mouthy idiotic conservative and she’s a ditz?

Like any show, it helps to know the characters. 30 Rock was in its first years the best comedy on American TV. Very tightly written and clever.

It’s been eclipsed, IMO, by newcomer Community, which also features an eclectic cast. I wasn’t sure about its prospects when it started, but it has really taken off.

Anyway, Alec Baldwin’s “Jack Donaghy” character is brilliant as the consummate corporate exec. Baldwin may be an ass, but he sure is convincing in this role.

Yes, the writers are definitely not tea party material. Who is your favorite character on Mod Fam? The spouse loves Manny and I am always cracking up at Cameron. Phil is a little too close to Michael Scott. And did you recognize Claire as the woman who played Adam Sandler’s manager/boss in Happy Gilmore?
