So yesterday, I went to the shooting range for the very first time in my life. If you had asked me 10 years ago would I go to the range and decide to buy a guy, I would have laughed. But times change and so have I.
I have to say, it was pretty interesting. I'm not sure what I expected. But it was loud - even with the hearing protection. I tried 3 different guns - I liked the revolver better than the 9mm's. I did keep my target. I can see that this is going to become a part of my routine now.
The folks at the range were really nice and gave me a lot of good advice.
So, I need to take a class and decide what to buy. I'm kind of leaning towards a revolver - seems a little bit easier maintenance for this newbie.
I grew up in the people's republic of Maryland and was quite the liberal in college. Ironically enough, it was contemplating the 2nd amendment that started me on the road back from the dark side. So, I guess the circle is now complete.
LOL - make that ‘buy a gun’. Although, I’m single again so buying a guy might work too. :D
You do know it’s illegal to buy a “guy” right?
must have been a freudian typo....:D
Your Freudian slip is showing.....
L o L !
Congrats, and welcome to years of enjoyment and peace of mind to come.
S&W 686 was my first gun, and I was glad it was.
Is the gun for home defense? If so a good shotgun will help ensure you hit the slimeball who is causing you trouble.
Give the .45 a try...especially the 1911. Classic gun...and pretty freaking hot. :) Here’s my subcompact...

I think that’s exactly how I feel - a bit of peace of mind. Although, I think I’ll definitely feel even more peace once I actually purchase a gun and ammo.
That was one I did not try. I think one of my friends who were there had a .45 but I didn’t try that one. Next time!
A revolver is a good thing.
LOL! I noticed. Gun people are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Gun shows are a lot of fun but the guys who go around looking at knives sometimes creep me out. ;-) I have not been to a show in a long time.
All I tried out were handguns this time. I’m sure I’ll be going back sometime in the next couple of weeks to test out a few more options.
Have a look at the Ruger service six .357. It packs a punch.
Great tag line. Just get what is comfortable for you, and practice, practice, practice. Take some handgun classes and just shoot.
Then do this:

OK, so this is a total newbie talking - - but I didn’t like how the spent casing (?) flies all over the place with the 9mm. One got me on the face and I didn’t really like that too much. Plus, loading the rounds into the clip seemed to be a little bit of a hassle. I guess that gets easier the more you do it.
The revolver just seemed less complicated. And no casing flying all over the place.
Revolvers are a fine choice for a newbie. They are solidly reliable, and a good way to build firearms handling skills for a beginner. Nothing wrong with that at all.
In my opinion, I prefer a revolver to a semi-auto if only having one gun. It’s simpler, less prone to malfunction, and as you say, easier to maintain.

I am reasonably priced
