Happens frequently in certain parts of the world, particularly Florida as far as the U.S. is concerned, although not typically of the magnitude in that picture.
I remember that happening once in downtown Columbus, Ohio and at the bottom of the sinkhole was the car of a lawyer. I think it was back in the mid 80’s.

I was going to school at The Ohio State University when that happened. It was a water main leak on a major street.
The driver of the Mercedes wouldn’t wait while traffic was backed up and tried to quickly pass the line of cars backed up.
The cars were passed but not the reason for the backup. The dumb driver picture made the front page.
