Too bad parts for them aren't that cheap anymore.

If that was from 1960, the car cost around $1565. $24.95 was about 2% of the new car cost.

National average wage in 1960 was about $4000. So $24.95 was about 0.75% of a year's wage.

The average yearly wage in 2008 was about $41,000. 0.75% of this is about $307.

The price of a replacement driver's side fender in 2005 (the latest year for this particular site) is $188.00 discounted to $68.

The used retail price of a 2008 VW Beetle hatchback is around $17,000. 2% of that is $340.

Since the difference between yearly wages 1960 versus 2008 is about 1:10, the discounted 2005 VW Beetle replacement fender is about $6.80 in 1960 dollars (with respect to average yearly wages), or less than 1/4 the 1960 price. So, the replace price of the more modern VW Beetle fender is way, WAY cheaper than it was back in 1960. This is true of almost everything except for certain types of furniture.
