Man was hunting Osama bin Laden because U.S. Military will not?

Posted on 06/17/2010 6:49:22 AM PDT by reaganator

I mentioned to a friend about the American who was captured in Pakistan hunting bin Laden.

I was told that the military deliberately does not capture or kill bin Laden because the military and the military contractors will make more money the longer bin Laden is "out there."

I took great offense at this and told him the U.S. delayed over 12 years in going back to war with Iraq even though they were continually in violation of the Gulf War Truce and a state sponsor of terrorism. I did not, but could have mentioned for over 40 years there was a "cold war" with the Soviets. A lot more defense money could have been spent in a real war with the Soviets. What a missed opportunity!

I just took real offense at America being smeared like this.

But, the discussion was ended when I was asked by him, "How many years did you serve". I was not in the military, he knew this.

He then went on to inform me that he had been in Vietnam dodging bullets so he should know more about this than me.

I asked him what he was studying on the matter, what research he does, what books he has read. (His resonse actually may have come after this question.)

I was told that does not matter because there is no way you can tell what is true. I pointed out that this is the information age and you can cross refernce sources.

All this did matter, he dodged bullets in 'Nam, I did not even serve. Conclusion: America's military must be deliberately not killing or capturing bin Laden just so military contractors can make money.

I respect my friend's service to our great nation. And besides that, he is my friend.

But he is WRONG.

If the U.S. Military has not been able to kill or capture bin Laden, why would one man “know where to start”?

He probably had a mountain dropped on him, dead.

I heard this years ago from someone who worked for the State Department as part of a the security team that prepared the morning report for Pres. Bush.

If our government, or military, actually wanted to find, and kill, someone - they could.

Collateral damage might be an issue though.

Any thoughts on this topic? ...

You won’t be happy with my answer either.

I believe Osama bin Laden is dead. I cannot cross reference or prove it.

It is in all the players’ interest to keep him or his ghost alive.

The Taliban need him for inspiration.

Bush and now Obama need him alive to use as a reason to implement any agenda they want to push.

It is about politics and not anything about smearing America that is just how the game is played. Never let a crisis or bogeyman go to waste.

They know where he is, it is not politically correct or politically feasible to go after him where he is located.

Somebody will have to show me an undeniably recent video of Bin Laden for me to believe he’s alive.

I think every single one of us at one time or another said or thought, “just give me a weapon, and drop me behind enemy lines”. Come on you all have. It was some sort of a fantasy hero ending we all had - a guy thing. But for this guy, he went beyond just dreaming about doing it. He did it.

Here’s a thought. Our government has deployed the military to Afghanistan for what, going on 8 years to find and destroy bin Laden? Now it has recently been reported that geologists have recently discovered that country has huge deposits of untapped mineral wealth that may top $1 trillion. Cowinky-dink? I dunno, but it may give one pause to contemplate..............

How many people, individuals would have to be involved and all willing to keep quiet about the fact that the War on Terror is nothing more than a money grab.

BS

The things that people have to WANT to believe are truly amazing.

yeah, the evil rich guys. I heard that one before, and often.

And always from some disgruntled individual who thinks he just isn’t getting his fair share.

1) Bush is no longer in the White House, or anywhere in government for that matter;

2) Obama doesn’t include defense against terrorists in any plans he makes... unless you count the Tea party, gun owners, and the like;

3) We are not currently in AFG (nor were we in Iraq) to find Bin Laden. We are barely looking for him, with the exception of a minimum number of SF. What we are doing is engaging a global terorist network on its home turf.

Folks, stop listening to Alex Jones. We have a WOT that demands your serious, adult attention.

He may have a point, but one not necessarily insulting to our military.

That is, from the onset of the WoT, there has been little evaluation of the *strategy* of the WoT, not just the tactics. So let me do a capsule summary of that strategy.

To start with, there are potential jihadis willing to leave dozens of countries to commit terrorist acts elsewhere, including here. But in their home countries, they are both indistinguishable from everyone else and impossible to fight.

So our strategy has been to cull the “cream of the crop”, by luring the most determined and capable jihadis to a place where they would fight our military, on our terms, instead of our civilians, on their terms.

This makes sense, because while there are hundreds of millions of Muslims who hate us, or at least sympathize with those who would attack us, only a small fraction would ever do *anything* personally.

And of those, most would only do it in their neighborhood, or home country. They just do not have the chutzpah to leave their country to commit acts of violence. Those that do are the “cream of the crop” that we want our army to kill.

Doing so not only takes the battle to the most dangerous, but helps to stabilize dozens of countries who would have had to contend with these villains otherwise.

Both Iraq and Afghanistan were superb for this purpose, regular “roach motels”, and we exterminated enormous numbers of the most dangerous terrorists on Earth. It will be generations before there are enough with “fire in the belly” to conduct international terrorism on the grand scale again.

The second thing we did was to attack those who were financing the terrorist side of the WoT. And while this was all paper shuffle, it still cut off large amounts of the money used to fund terrorism.

But the one part of the WoT we never pursued was the assassination of the instigators, the fiery individuals who inspire others to become terrorists. We killed everybody lower on the food chain, wiping out their organizational middle managers, but we never nailed these guys.

So the question is why? The answer to that is that people like Osama bin Laden are ineffectual. Figureheads. Cheerleaders. They only seem important because they get publicity.

But they also attract followers, who would otherwise be invisible to us. These followers want to meet with and chatter with “the great one”, which gives us an opportunity to nail them before they can go operational.

So why hasn’t our military gone after, captured or killed Osama? Both because he really doesn’t matter, and second, because he lures the dangerous ones out into the open.

It’s a strategy.

Really, thanks, for the news flash. I was referring to history and why it is and was to no ones benefit to find a dead man or declare him dead. He is more useful “alive” to politicians that way.

2) Obama doesn’t include defense against terrorists in any plans he makes... unless you count the Tea party, gun owners, and the like;

No-DUH, but that doesn’t stop Obama from having an Osama card in his hand that he can throw down if he sees an advantage to it, for what ever reason in the future. Why get rid of it by announcing him dead or finding him prematurely ?

3) We are not currently in AFG (nor were we in Iraq) to find Bin Laden. We are barely looking for him, with the exception of a minimum number of SF. What we are doing is engaging a global terorist network on its home turf.

Correct I agree. By the way this was a Bush Administration idea to fight them there instead of here. And I agree with the policy of fighting them overseas.
