-- Hatch is thinking of Robert Bennett - the other RINO in Utah. Hatch knows he is next. --

Bingo. Hatch suggested Ginsberg for SCOTUS, so you know his stated reason for failing to support Kagan is baloney.

Kagan's confirmation is safe. The girl senators will vote for the girl nominee.

I don’t view Hatch as a RINO at all. Have you ever watched him during the Clarence Thomas hearings? In any event, bravo for him on this one.

I think Grahmnasty has already said he’s going to vote to confirm.

he is being allowed to vote no because one vote does not matter.

It will be like sotomayor, one scraficial RINO will vote yes.

When Bob Bennett got tossed, Hatch spoke with bravado about how he wasn’t worried and that he’s tougher than Bennett. But like McCain, he’s trying to save his political future. If he votes no on Kagan, it will be because he’s scared. I hope Utahns vote him off the island anyway.

Voting up or down means nothing. The question is if he is willing to filibuster.

While Hatch's announcement gives marching orders to the other more moderate Republicans, like Grassley, Voinivich and Dick Lugar, you've got to imagine that Collins, Snowe and Graham are about as close to a sure thing as you can get...

I understand you might settle for a Scott Brown from Mass.

Why would anyone settle for a Hatch from Utah?

I think Bennett was a wakeup call for him, but he's still a squish.

You need to include the 3rd girlie-man - Nancy Gramnesty.

No kidding. His staff became very belligerent and defiant when contacted to ask if he'd (Nan Gramnesty) vote against Kagan. Bottom line...he'll vote FOR her nomination.

Why, or why do the fine folks of SC keep reelecting this joke?

Too many Kennedy-Hatch proposals since then.

"Why would anyone settle for a Hatch from Utah?"

I don't know. My comments certainly weren't intended as an endorsement of Orrin Hatch, in any way. I was just trying to explore the practical reality of Kagan's confirmation battle.

I think Orrin Hatch is basically a decent fellow. He was actually a firebrand conservative when he first came up and helped corral moderate Democrats to join him in filibusters against some of the more outrageous liberal legislation.

As bad as things are now, people who aren't old enough to remember that post Watergate/Ford/early Carter era which lasted from 1974-78 have no idea how weak the conservative movement was at that time.

Even solidly conservative states like Idaho (Frank Church), Wyoming (Gale McGee) and Utah (Frank Moss) had far left senators who were routinely re-elected because they brought home the pork.

Most senators, including Orrin, tend to grow too much like Washington the longer they stay there. Jesse Helms was one of the few exceptions to that rule.

Hatch calls Kagan filibuster 'dirty thing to do'

A Republican filibuster of Elena Kagan would be "an unheard of, dirty thing to do," Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Thursday.

Hatch, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told ABC News's "Topline" today that his party won't prevent an up-or-down vote on Obama's SCOTUS nominee.

"Republicans aren't going to filibuster her," he said.

A filibuster is the only way to stop her. Hatch is full of it.

You’ve almost got to wonder how much dirt Byrd had on some of these people.

Dick Lugar our senator from Indiana fits that description. He's a good man at heart but been in DC far too long - 34 years.

34 years is WAY too long.
