Whom should I root for?? Why should I care? Australia is not really an important country. It is sparsely populated.

"Why should I care?"

Because while Australia is a smallish country, their conservatives have the right ideas on some big issues, not the least of which is gloBULLwarming. There wasn't a stronger, more rational voice against Kyoto than John Howard. This lady, and her party, are just like the climate change moron here and in the UK.

If for no other reason than that reason, it would nice to see the conservatives win the PM. But, this lady is at the height of her popularity, and this is a shrewd move on her part.

Aside from them being a regional ally and strategic partner in the Western Pacific?

And lets not forget the CIA/NSA base in Alice Springs which we run jointly with the Aussies.

And also, I look for the Aussies to be a vital ally in the coming war between western civilization and the Muslim barbarians.

It's going to be the U.S., Australia, Israel and maybe...maybe, the Brits against the the Muslim/Socialist world. So I would never knock the Aussies. They were great allies in 'Nam and they'll be great allies in the coming conflict, as long as they can put a conservative government in place.

If the Marxist Ms. Gillard wins this election, Australia will not be a US ally much longer.

Hard to say given the Marxist leading the US but history has shown amity between communists is not universal. China and Russia were not exactly buddy buddy.

I’m hoping you are being sarcastic….IF not…
Well, you sound like obama…saying “ Iran is a small country…and of no importance”

Australia is our ally….(or was )..….what happens there is very important….

They were great allies in 'Nam...

Amazing understatement. If only more people in the US knew of the contributions of the diggers in the Viet Nam war...

Not to mention the contributions of the RAN and the RAAF in Viet Nam.

I was asking for information because I have not followed Australian politics. To me, their conservatives seem socialist like in UK, but unlike UK I don't hear much about Aud. So I thought that if someone took the trouble of posting the news, maybe the person could let me know who the conservative was.

Australia like the US and other countries has reached the critical point in critical mass where recipients of government largesse outnumber those who pay for it. It will therefore join places like Argentina and Zimbabwe at the bottom of the heap.

"To me, their conservatives seem socialist like in UK..."

Fair point. While it's true that their "conservatives" aren't quite our conservatives, they are much close to American conservationism than to the UK Tories.

I don't know enough about their immediate political landscape to give you any informed insight with respect who are the specific conservative politicians you should be looking for. Sorry.

The Liberal Party in Australia is the conservative. Liberals have a history of being strong fiscally (much stronger than GOP). They spent 7+ years repaying 200+b of debt incurred by the Labor party during the 1990s, only to see the Labor party incurring 200+b in less than 3 years once in power

OK… …sometimes I too have trouble understanding another country’s definition of conservative or liberal..

But your post did not ask a question….your post was demeaning toward the Australians….they have been good friends …..

Demeaning, no. Saying they are not that important and so not in my consciousness, yes. As for the good friends part, I think I prefer to wait and watch because even the Europeans were good friends one time. Now all they do is hate us.
