What I mean by amazing is that if anyone would believe it. It reads like some kind of dark, bete noire, novel.

I hate to be sceptical, but based on this cad's past, can we believe any of this is true?.

And that really cuts to the core of the matter. Since we know he is not trustworthy, how can we believe, in a real way, anything he says or does or is written about him?

I do not trust anything, nothing, anything, about this guy.
