McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh can sense friction in the camps of main rivals Red Bull and Ferrari - whose motor homes his championship-leading outfit are next to in the Hungaroring paddock. McLaren driver Jenson Button has accepted a portion of the responsibility for Michael Schumacher's difficult return to Formula 1 this season because the German's Mercedes car is based on the Brawn GP 2010 car that was designed to accommodate the Briton's preference for understeer. Button won the drivers' crown with Brawn in 2009.

Former F1 driver Eddie Irvine would not wish to volunteer as an FIA race steward without confirmation that he would have a significant influence over on-track incidents as he has disagreed with a few previous decisions.

The number of wheel tethers used in F1 is set to increase next year in an effort to reduce the risk of wheels coming away from cars and thus improve the safety of the sport. Currently, cars are fitted with one tether to each wheel - a second could now be added to each wheel from 2011.

Derek Warwick will join the stewards' panel for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. He is the fourth British ex-grand prix driver to advise race officials this year, after former world champions Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell advised in Monaco and at Silverstone respectively, while grand prix winner Johnny Herbert also joined the panel in Malaysia and Turkey.

Former Ferrari favourite Michael Schumacher has had a private word with close friend Felipe Massa about the 'team orders' furore that erupted at last weekend's German Grand Prix. "He's experienced enough not to need advice from my side," he said. "I definitely had a little conversation with him but that's naturally of a private nature."
