Is there a reason to kill these things so viciously for the sake of killing them? Ugh, I usually am libertarian but in this instance I think this is barbaric.

I dunno if you wanna ping the Whale Wars ping list, this got me sick after seeing the pictures. I can understand a few whales being killed for food, but ripping out calves from the mothers wombs just for S + G is disgusting...

Sick bastards.

Animal abusers almost always migrate to offing people, and many have serious mental issues that only warrants the death penalty as an effective cure.

I agree. There are many of here that belong to the Japanese “they’ve been doing it for centuries” crowd. I think its senseless.

“Locals kill whales for food. A Fisheries Office spokesman said: “We use the most efficient and humane means of killing.”

All that needs to be said

It's called hunting for food and it appears to be no more brutal than any other culling of a herd.

What’s wrong with it if the animals are used?

One must kill and butcher the cow to get the steak. Many urban people of today have lost comprehension of that fact. I took my daughter fishing and we caught a nice rainbow. We kept it in a bucket of water until we got home. I killed the fish, gutted it and my wife cooked it. Both my daughter and my wife could not eat the fish. It should be noted both my wife and daughter are avid fish eaters-i.e. fish from a fish market!

I am assuming these are Faroe Islanders, who have been hunting pilot whales for over 1,000 years. There are so many whales that they serously deplete fishing grounds around the islands. These islanders rely heavily on fishing. Its no more barbaric than butchering any other animal.

Any one out there that eats meat should get a grip. The meat you eat was an animal that was slaughtered. Today in the developed world it is done in slaughter houses out of site of the public.

In the not to distant past you fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers would do this to feed their families in the front yard with cows, goats, sheep or other animals.

Personal in the last five years in my travels to less developed areas of the world I have twice had the “fatted calf” slaughtered to fed me and and the group I was with.

Oh, the humanity ...

Get over yourselves, those people need to eat the same as we do. If you eat meat yourselves, STFU ... being at the top of the food chain has its advantages.

If you're a vegan, enjoy your brussel sprouts.

Is slaughtering whales worse than cows, sheep, or pigs? If so, why?

Perhaps fishermen don't like the whales because they eat the same fish that the fishermen catch?

Whale hunting on the Faroe Islands, a Danish constituent country. The economy of these islands relied almost entirely on fishing until the industry collapsed in the early 1990's. Records of this type of hunt date back to 1584. The images are graffic if you are squeemish.

Keep in mind that the pictures were taken by one of the Sea Shepherds (Peter Hammarstedt, the little rat faced hippie) and it is from the UK Sun, so it's more than a little biased against whaling.

From the Faroe Minister of Fisheries:

The pilot whale hunt in the Faroes is, by its very nature, a dramatic and bloody sight. Entire schools of whales are killed on the shore and in the shallows of bays with knives which are used to sever the major blood supply to the brain. This is the most efficient and humane means of killing these animals under the circumstances, but it naturally results in a lot of blood in the water. It is also understandable that there have been many strong reactions to media reports and pictures of the hunt in other countries, especially in urban communities, where most people have never actually been witness to the slaughtering processes from which their own meat derives.

Please let me know if you wants on/off the Whale Wars Ping List.

If people need to kill these animals to survive, I can accept it. If they don’t, then they should leave these beautiful creatures alone.

As for how it looks, any slaughter house looks just as bad, if not worse. Yes, it’s barbaric, we humans have always been that and worse.
