I happen to know someone who worked directly for Hoover and from what he has told me, he was nothing like how he has been portrayed over the years. For one thing, he never went by J. Edgar Hoover. A total press fabrication of his name. He just went by John.

He was definitely not gay and had a great sense of humor. The last thing he told me that was interesting was that this great dosseir he had on everyone did not exist. Many thought it existed and he allowed that rumor to go unchecked because he wanted them to think he was all powerful.
