Google does what Google is required to do under the laws of the country. Google defended our privacy here according to the law, which does not allow for DOJ fishing expeditions through private data so it can prove a point in a case not even related to Google.
Likewise, Google was following the laws in China. The ethical question there was whether to operate in China at all given the laws Google would have to follow.
