Had this happen frequently in a 150-year-old home I owned (had hollow walls). The way to deal with the odor? Grin and bear it. Will only last a couple of days. In the meantime, try Febreeze. Seriously.

I agree. We lived in an 1840’s house in Michigan and the odor does disappear after a while. At least wait a week and go to Home Depot and get a gel that acts as a room deodorizer. We had bats in the hollow walls and after we found out where they were coming and going and plugged the hole, the odor started but it soon disappeared.
