Some Little Rock School District students had an abbreviated first day of school. They were sent home, because they weren't wearing uniforms.
Parents of some Cloverdale Charter Middle School students say their kids were kicked out of class before the opening bell rang this morning even though they signed a waiver opting out of the uniform policy. Parents were told the waiver did not apply to Cloverdale even though the school is in the Little Rock School District.
Melissa Ragan's daughter Angel was one of the students who came to school without a uniform. Ragan was annoyed to learn that the waiver does not apply at Cloverdale--but says what enraged her was that Cloverdale Principal Willie Vinson began yelling at the students. "He's like look anybody that has a problem wearing uniforms go find you another school, this school is strictly uniform only and if you have a problem with it, go find you another school...and my daughter started crying," recalls Ragan.
LRSP spokesperson Tiffany Hoffman says parents were warned that the uniform waiver did not apply at Cloverdale although parents we spoke with say that's untrue. Hoffman says, "I think it is very important that communication be a two way street."
Some of the students who were sent home including Angel Ragan say they feel they were mistreated by Principal Vinson and will not return to Cloverdale, they will attend Mabelvale Middle School instead. We reached out to Principal Vinson to ask him about what happened, but he never returned our call.
You either have a uniform policy or you don’t. How could you sign a waiver to opt out? The principal’s right: Go find you another school, fool!
A dress code is reasonable to set expectations. Uniforms are for socialists.
Really. I know a few thousand members of the US Armed Forces who might want to speak to you about that statement.
and scouts and nurses and ............
As a pretty much life-long Arkansas resident, and now living in North Little Rock - anyone who sends their children to any of the public schools in Pulaski County are taking a big chance. There is a reason there are so many private schools around here - and more coming online all the time.
There is a reason for the charter schools popping up (that don’t have to follow all the district/state regulations)... something different has to be done.
I am sure we are not getting the whole story in this case. When I was a teacher, I got accused of “yelling at students” ... but funny thing is - I didn’t. But students and parents pull that card out when their argument falls on its face.
Back to my initial statement - how can anyone who loves their child send them to a public school in Pulaski County (Little Rock, North Little Rock, or Pulaski County Special School District)?
Unfortunately, PCSSD demonstrated why the district is so bad - other than the decades-long desegregation struggles that encompassed the whole county - the teacher’s union rules, and a judge basically handed power back to the union after the district tried to kick the union out.
They can be, but they are traditional in Catholic schools, and maybe that’s where they should stay. Strict dress codes for public schools, uniforms for Catholic schools. I couldn’t imagine not sending my daughter off in her plaid jumper to school every day back when she was in school.
The school’s web site states “Uniforms with school logos are required.” The motto is “Where mediocrity and excuses are unacceptable.”

Not in our house. They are the best thing to happen for my grandsons. The emphasis shifts from clothes to more serious issues, like learning - especially for the girls. It is so nice to see kids tidy, shirts tucked in, no logos or printing, pants with belts, no bare skin. On Wednesday they wear a white dress shirt because it’s chapel day. Also saves us a ton of money and yet allows the kids to have a couple of really cool outfits for parties and such.
So many people have come to expect the rules to be bent for them.
