Just FYI: the screenwriter was known to be a leftist -- Louis B. Mayer (the studio head) hired him for that reason. Mayer apparently regretted it, and stormed out of the New York City premiere, "enraged at the way the film seemed to equate wealth with fascism".
Republican members of Congress apparently felt the film bordered on propaganda, and demanded future guidelines from the Hays Commission.
